This is a tricky one, if I could see it I could kill it, but... it ain't showing.



Please go to hijackthis.exe and right click on it and then click on rename and rename it to foolyou.exe, press enter
and post a new log from the newly renamed hijackthis.exe. Sometimes malware hides from hijackthis.exe.



Please download SilentRunners from here:

Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.
The program will take longer to run, but will give us more information.

Part one: rename Hijackthis, foolyou.exe. I did this but once it is changed I get a message that says, " For some reason your system denied write access to the Host files. If any highjacked domains are in this file, Highjack this may not be able to fix this.....Then instructions on how edit the file manually.

I have had people rename hijackthis.exe a hundred times at least over the years with no problems.

It doesn't give you a log when renamed, is that right?


Now reboot into safe mode( without networking support) by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.


You may need to disable antispyware program to fix the below

OK. I loaded Hijackthis, saved to desktop and renamed on desktop foolyou.exe. When I opened to run, I got these error messages:
For some reason you were denied write access to host files and .....you may have to edit yourself...."C\windows\System32\drivers\etc\hotos" ....then save as "hosts" and reboot.
I closed that window and the following error message was there: unexpected error at proced modMain-CheckOtherItemP Error #75-Path/Fileaccesserror.

This is paraphrased.

Then I ran the program but I forgot to put in safe mode (sorry) and I followed all instructions with the checks and "fix checked" then realized what I had done, closed it out (after finished) rebooted in safe mode and 2 of the checked items were there, so checked, fix checked and it removed those.
rebooted and had trouble getting connected at fist but then got on Firefox.

A good thing to do after version updates is clear your Ignore list and re-add them, as the format of detected items sometimes changes.

fyi--after the hijackthis and foolyou.exe and sending you the logs, i checked Exployer and aboutblank is still very active, although still not showing on foxfire yet.

Since the about:blank is not happening on Firefox, but only on IE, would it make any sense to remove IE, run cclearner and reinstall the IE?

I don't think you can remove IE 7 from Vista as it is an integrated part of the system. If it was on an xp system you can do this.
