    Re: Windows Update/Search problems

Fix these with hijackthis, just minimal clutter:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C8B2A36-3DB1-42A4-A3CB-D426709BBFEB} - (no file)

All windows closed and fix'em, reboot afterwards.

Log is now clean, how is she behaving?

    MBAM was clean also.

No apparent change with the original problem reported. Still not able to download and install any Windows updates.

Are you useing Internet Explorer to get your updates?

    Can you get updates manually?

Uninstall all old java updates from add/remove program

Did you have symantec anti-virus on this PC at sometime?

I have used the Symantec uninstaller. Problem remains. Windows update does appear to be downloading something but nothing shows up - just a blank page.

I have also tried this link:

    http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

    It results in this message:

Windows Update has encountered an error. Please try the following:

Install the latest version of the Microsoft XML Parser from the Microsoft Download Center:

In the Worldwide Downloads list, select the appropriate language for your computer and then click Go.
In the Keywords box, type Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack and then click Go.
In the list of available downloads, click Microsoft XML Parser (MSXML) 3.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4).
Follow the instructions on your screen.
After the installation, try the Windows Update site again.

I have downloaded and installed this download but the message remains the same. I am out of ideas.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Did you try dial-a-fix from the link I provided.

Might try going to the XP Help forum here at D-A-L and see if they can help you.
