    [RESOLVED] Windows Environment error?

I logged into another user on my computer and before it logged in, there was this popup window. the window was titled Windows Environment or something of the sort. anyways, there was a message. i was only able to catch the second message and it said this:

"Windows cannot find the local profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Changes you make to this profile will be lost when you log off."

then when it fully logged in, everything on the desktop was gone except for the recycle bin and the usual things. the desktop background was also set to the default one and the My Documents folder was also empty (except My Music/Pictures).

I searched in the Documents And Settings folder and apparently everything was still there. nothing was really "lost", but somehow things weren't showing up on the actual user.

out of the 3 users on this computer, only 2 were affected by this. the 3rd one (the one I mainly use) is completely intact. after restarting the computer, one of the altered users got completely restored and everything was on and desktop and in their original places. the other user that was affected was still affected however.

    here's my hijackthis log

Your best option may be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:

    Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

    REBOOT.

Are you running two (2) real-time always on antivirus tools at the same time (MCAFEE and AVG)? That could create serious Issues. In that case, you should uninstall one of them.

You are using an outdated version of HijackThis. Please uninstall the current version and install latest version as per instructions below:

Click here to download HJTInstall.exe (Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2).
    • Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
    • Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
    • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
    • Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
    • Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
    • Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
    • At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.

    • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button.
      • It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
      • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
      • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
    • DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
    • DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
alright. system restore did the job.
and I have a McAfee firewall and I may have forgotten to uninstall the anti-virus component after getting AVG
