I have contracted a problem and I can't get rid of it. I tried to reinstall my System Mechanic and it says I can not install Virus protector or Firewall and must remove current programs to install....It says there is VirusRanger 3.2 and my Anti Virus and McAfee as my Firewall. Neither is to be found on my computer. I try to start a SM virus protector and it says "can not load DVPAPI. This thing is all messed up on me and I am afraid I am operating without protection. I just wanted to follow this up a little more since I have had no replies. I contacted Iolo Sys mech. and they told me this is a software issue not concerning them and I need to contact the program source. Since I never installed these programs and can't find any trace of these programs other then my warning from sys mech, I can't remove virusranger because it is not there. Don't know what to do.
I can't seem to be able to install an antivirus or get one to work until I can clean up this computer and get all virus protecters and firewalls off this and then I can start over. I just can't seem to be able to remove all my corupt antivirus programs.

Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it:

• It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click "Yes",
• Let it through your firewall!

  • Close browsers before scanning
  • Scan for tracking cookies (default)
  • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

    • Scan Alternate Data Streams (OPTIONAL Selection – deeper, trickier infection issues - longer scan).
  • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
• On the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
  
  • On the left check "C:\Fixed Drive".
  • On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click "OK".
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click "Next".
  • It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click "Yes".
• To retrieve the removal information - please do the following:
  • After reboot, double-click the "SUPERAntiSpyware icon" on your desktop.
  • Click "Preferences". Click the Statistics/Logs TAB.
  • Under "Scanner Logs", double-click "SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log".
  • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
  • Please highlight everything , then right-click and choose copy.
• Click close and close again to exit the program.
• Please paste:
  • The SAS LOG information.
  • A new HijackThis LOG (with any current observations).

I still can't load my System Mechanic anti-virus. Something is not right here. Sorry for my oblivious lack of computer knowledge! I recieve an error "The Component "DVPAPI" is required for iolo anti-virus to operate properly and can not be started.

I have been struggling with this problem for weeks now, I'm not sure what I did to this computer. I tried to reinstall SYS MEch to no avail. Pulling my hair out Crazy!!!

I initially had you use SUPERAntiSpyware (SAS) because there was a recent update for VirusRanger in that tool. Since SAS was unable to find any indication of that potentially DANGEROUS infection, there would be nothing fix. See if the 'Prevx CSI' tool reports that there are still KNOWN problems on your PC and (at least, potentially fixable for a fee) VirusRanger, in particular:

Your best option may be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes:

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.

I apologize about the repeated post, it won't happen again. This is becoming interesting. Prevx CSI didn't find anything. This problem has been with me for a few weeks now and the restore point won't go back far enough. The only indication that this issue is even present is when I try and install System mechanic's anti-virus it advises me that it can not install until I remove my present anti-virus virusranger 3.2. I called System Mechanic and I was told that they have no control of the software on my computer and that I will have to call virusranger in order to remove there program. in other words there is no work around from them. I feel like I am locked into an issue here and I can't get out of it. SHould I call SYstem Mechanic back and tell them the software is not present and this is an eronious warning?
