You asked 'How is it going now?'
That boxed 'Win32/GenericA' appearing on my screen once Spyware Terminator had done its daily scan did NOT affect the performance of my computer (at least not that I had noticed), so the above operations did not seem to have had an immediate impact on the overall functioning of my system.
I will let you know tomorrow morning if the boxed warning has re-appeared, following the Spyware Terminator scan.
Until then, tit for tat, I am asking YOU:
'How does it look now?'
-
UPDATE: The boxed warning DID re-appear this morning after the Spyware Terminator scan. Maybe ST is the issue, sending me false positives... although having installed it a couple months ago, it hadn't created any such problems until early this week.
I have heard it said that clicking on the Ignore button instead of the Remove button, the message didn't re-appear subsequently.
What do you think?
BTW, Vista prompted me to proceed with a Restore Point this morning. Given my present 'circumstances', I declined to make such a move for now. Do you think it would be safe enough for me to proceed at this time?
And finally, Microsoft sent a number of updates my way this AM, which I downloaded and installed.
Let me know what you think.

Spyware Terminator needs to be uninstalled if it did not come with the crawler toolbar.
There is a rogue one of those out there that causes false positives and you may have that one.
You need to turn teatimer off it is still on, all hijackthis fixes are still there. Do it this way.
I notice that you have Spybot's TeaTimer running. While this is normally a wonderful tool to protect against hijackers, it can also interfere with HijackThis fixes. So please disable TeaTimer by doing the following:- Run Spybot-S&D
- Go to the Mode menu, and make sure "Advanced Mode" is selected
- On the left hand side, choose Tools -> Resident
- Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts if any
You can reenable TeaTimer once your system is clean.
Do the hijackthis fixes again please.
-
OK.
I started by uninstalling SpyTerminator and then went to HiJackThis to delete the files you had identified. Which I thought I did, until I did a second scan with logfile, only to notice that that said files had NOT been deleted.
When I did the 'Scan System Only', after the scan HJT produced (as it did all previous times) a box basically saying:
For some reason, your system denied access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HJT may NOT be able to fix this.
If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type
notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts
and press Enter. Find the line(s) HJT reports and delete them.
For Vista, simply exit HJT, right click on HJT icon, choose Run as Administrator.
I restarted the computer, and followed the instructions given for Vista.... bascally with the same results. So.... here is my latest HJT report:

The thing is when I went to delete the lines the last few times, I couldn't even find the lines
R0... = about:blank
and
R0...Toolbar,LinksFolderName
even though they obviously appear in the latest report I pasted above.
Again, thanks for your help.
(P.S.: I haven't re-installed Spy Protector)
Incidentally, when I DID open Spybot as per your instructions, the second time around, 'Resident Tea Timer' WAS unchecked but, as I have mentioned already, I did not see any OK prompts so perhaps the initial changes had (have) not been recorded.

Do the fixes from safe mode:
Now reboot into safe mode( without networking support) by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.
I've never come across this before but Vista is relatively new to me anyway.

I didn't find the other lines to be deleted and am assuming they have been removed during an earlier attempt.
Have you learned anything new about this Trojan or about the possibility that it might have been a false positive? Has Microsoft issued a memorandum on this subject?
Given that I have removed (temporarily or permanently) SpyTerminator from my system, I may not receive a daily notice of the presence of that virus from Windows Defender. Which doesn't mean the Trojan has been removed (assuming that it had been there in the first place)

Remembering that a Kaspersky scan can sometimes be useful in such circumstances, I am posting below the results of the one I performed a very short while ago. Kaspersky found no viruses, infected or suspicious objects during the scan:

You should be good to go.
Don't worry about those that would not delete for some strange reason, they are empty registry entries and are harmless.

OK, so we might be talking false positive here?
Not sure I am willing to re-install Spy Terminator, because from what I've read elsewhere on the Net, in a good number of such cases (i.e. my problem), the Windows Defender warning and ST seem to be related.
Do you know of a good protection software that I could use as a replacement? Incidentally, I DID use Sygate when I had Windows XP but there seems to be an incompatibility problem since I have switched to Vista.
Many thanks for all your help, as usual, Neal.

Good free anti spyware is:
http://www.superantispyware.com/
I have that program and really like it.
Vista firewall isn't so bad like sp2 is:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/l.../bb877967.aspx
If you do use another firewall make sure only one is running at a time.
If you are no longer having any more trouble here is some preventative measures for you.
Be sure to re-hide hidden files/folders if you were asked to unhide them
[color=red]Here are some preventive measures you can take to keep your computer from getting infected again. Also keep SpybotS&D updated.

Flush your restore points in ME and XP, by turning System Restore off and then back on.
This will create a fresh restore point.
Explained Here:
Windows XP: http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDoc...ysRestore.aspx

To reduce the re-infection potential for malware and protect yourself against spyware, here are a few helpful suggestions:
1. Keep Windows and Internet Explorer current with the latest critical security updates from Microsoft. This will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You CANNOT complete this update using an alternate browser.
http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp
2. Run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep its definitions up-to-date. If you are thinking about switching, there are a some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.
AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html
3. In addtion to using Ad-aware consider using another free malware scanning/removal program:
Windows Defender
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx
4. Consider using a free firewall if you are not already using one. Some good free ones are:
Kerio
Sunbelt
Comodo Personal Firewall:
Comodo
5. Consider using an alternate free browser for general web surfing but you must use IE for windows update.
Mozilla Firefox: www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
6. Consider increasing your browser security by using these programs:
SpywareGuard will protect your homepage from being hijacked: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
SpywareBlaster will increase browser protection by blocking Thousands of known malware sites by adding them to IE's restricted sites zone. Download it here:
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
If you use SpywareBlaster, you can also use a customblocklist to add even more entries into IE restricted sites zone. Go to this site for the current list and how to use instructions: http://customblockinglist.cjb.net/
IE-SPYAD is similar in that it adds thousands more known malware sites to IE's restricted zone. Download it here:
https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm
Block access to Untrustworthy Sites
You can prevent your computer from visiting a myriad of untrustworthy sites and ad-servers by installing a customised hosts file. One of the best available is the: MVPS Hosts File. Simply follow the instructions to install the file in the correct location. This will not only make surfing safer but will improve website load times and block popups from many of the large ad-servers.
*Remember just like your primary anti-virus software, it is important to keep all of these programs up-to-date and use them on a regular basis. It's Free
