i cannot find the files you asked about on the computer but i have 2 shortcuts on my desktop entitled:

Help and Support
and
Windows Update

when i right click and click on properties, it isn't a normal file.
the target type for Help and support shortcut is a website: storageprotector.com/clean/?p=61('and' as a symbol')gai=s5r....

and for Windows Update it is:storageprotector.com/clean/?p=60('and' as a symbol')gai=s5r....

i cannot retrieve the last bit of the target name as it cuts off the window.

thinking about it these two shortcuts were not there before all the problems started with the computer.

i have tried using the internet today and a message pops up on nearly every screen saying:

your current security settings prohibit running activeX controls on this page. As a result, the page may not display properly.

this never used to happen before. some of the pages i go on hardly work. e.g. Hotmail

Simply download RogueRemover from: http://www.malwarebytes.org/rogueremover.php. Unzip to a convenient location such as C:\RogueRemover folder. Navigate to the folder you unzipped the files to and double click on the file named RogueRemover.exe. Finally, select Scan and the program will walk you through the remaining steps.

If you are still experienceing the activex thing after the above do this:



Try resetting IE back to default:


Tools > Internet Options > Security > high light Internet > reset all zones to default level > may require a reboot.

hi before you wrote back, i went on the internet to see if the computer worked. AVG ran a scan automatically as i was on the internet and found 304 trojans in the file documents and settings\vikren~1\shared

i think this may be because i connected to the net but i will carry out the instructions you asked and will post a HijackThis Log

i know you did not ask for one but i hope you could have a look at this HijackThis log as i feel i may still have something on my computer. as i said in my last post, 304 trojans appeared in my shared folder whilst on the internet. hope you can help

Log is clean,

running two anti-virus is not good and will lower your security, please uninstall AVG Free or Mcafee. Do you have a firewall with mcafee? Is mcafee up to date?

If you uninstall mcafee you will need to get yourself a firewall, Sunbelt Kerio is good to start with. Windows firewall isn't much punkin.


New scanner:



* Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from HERE or HERE

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and zLaunch Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy&Paste the entire report in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.


Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove,you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts,click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process,if asked to restart the computer,please do so immediatly.

hey i used the anti-malware program twice to make sure it found everything and i will post both logs below.

on the questions asked about mcafee: it works normally i think although it rarely finds any viruses, e.t.c.. it is a 2006 version and they do not allow me to get updates because it is too old (which i don't think is fair) but i will be purchasing a new internet security software. can you recommend any?

another point i must add is that avg keeps popping up stating that it has found trojans in a certain place, there are about 15 - 20 trojans. although when i do an anti virus search it never finds them.

they were in the file: c:\system volume information\_restore....

Highjackthis is clean

For a complete security package I guess I would go with Trendmicro PC-cillian which includes a firewall. My wife has this package on her PC and she likes it and has never been infected yet and she surfs willy nilly.

I don't use a suite/package, I have individual components

What AVG is finding is ok where it is, we can flush that stuff out as a last step.

MBAM removed some stuff from that location anyway.

What is the PC doing now?

the computer seems fine now, i connected it to the net for a while and pages were loading easily with no problems. operationally, the computer is working the same as it used to back before whatever was on there was on it.
im ready for the next step....if there is one lol?
