My girlfriend's laptop just started acting crazy today. After logging on to vista, it would lock up. This occured approximately 3-4 times and gave me an error of "unable to connect to WMI provider host". I ran crapcleaner and it seems to be running a little bit better. just wanted to see if anything is showing up in a hijackthis log.

While running hijackthis, i got an error as well:

for some reason your system denied write access to the hosts file. if any hijacked domains are in this file, hijackthis may not be able to fix this. if that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. to do this click start, run and type:

c:\\windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. find the line(s) hijackthis reports and delete them. save the file as "hosts." (with quotes), and reboot.

The attempted write access is not a good sign. However, cleaning out the current contents may be a prudent step:

Get HostsXpert here:

• Unzip it to a convenient place and run the program.
• On the left-hand column:
  Click the ‘File Handling’ BUTTON.
  • If you see red text (‘Make Writeable?’) then press the ‘Make Writeable’ button.
  • Then press the ‘Restore MS Hosts file’ button and OK.
  • Click Download>MVP’s Hosts>Replace (to get a clean list of block items, if desired).
  • Click File Handling>'Make ReadOnly?'.
• Close the program.

Give us an update on what is happening.

Ok did all that and now I'm getting the following error when running hijackthis:

Uninstall your current version and download the latest version of HijackThis from here:

Click on do a system scan and save a log file button and copy/paste it back here into this thread please.



Click here to download HJTInstall.exe (Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2).

• Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
• Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\HijackThis.
• Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
• Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
• Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
• At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch HijackThis.
  
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button.
  • It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
• DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
• DO NOT have HijackThis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

It seemed to be running fine, but then started having the same issues the other day. I ran CCleaner and it seemed to fix the problem. Also I'm still getting the same error when running hijackthis. I also did a Registry scan through CCleaner. Here are the results (had to upload 2 files so you could see everything).....
