AVG Anti-Spyware first advised me of this yesterday morning with a warning panel as the machine started. It describes this bug as a low-level threat, and that I can ignore it. Then it goes on to say that it could be used by a hacker to access passwords. Interesting definition of 'low-level'.
What's the verdict? Leave it be, or kill it? I decided to ignore the Ignore advice and quarantined it, only have it reappear in a different file.

AVG has detected a BHO. BHO's can off course pose a danger to your system but it isn't possible to advise you about this particular BHO. Make sure you have performed all the spyware scans detailed in the "Read This First" thread at the top of this forum and then post a Hijack This Log so that somebody can identify your problem.

Just out of curiosity - I have noticed that a lot of the banner ads at Yahoo Mail - among other sites - aren't appearing since about the same time as I started getting the warning. Instead I get the 'Unable to connect' message. Could this be related to the BHO?

There is no suspect BHO currently showing in your current LOG.

An arbitrary malware name assigned by a given vendor is often very unhelpful for research purposes and even more so when the filename is randomized. For any suspect filename, it is best to submit it for multi-vendor analysis to see if the suspected malware is also on someone else's radar. :

Install Options:

• Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
• Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Do not run CCleaner until requested later.





Run CCleaner in SAFE MODE (reboot tapping the F8 key after the beep).

Select the ‘Options’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), ‘Advanced’ BUTTON, and then UNCHECK the ‘Only delete files in Windows Temp Folders older than 48 hours’ (often, the latest download traffic could be the bearer of bad content – RESET back to default after this particular cleaning).

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.

• Click the ‘Analyse’ button.

I'm not quite clear on the Java thing. XP is now showing two Java entries in Control Panel > Add and Remove Programs: J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 11, and now I've just downloaded Java(TM) ^ Update 4. Does the second supersede the first?

You only want the latest JAVA verson on your PC. Otherwise, the older available version(s) vulnerabilities may still be specifically exploitable.

Okay, I've got just the latest Java on board now.

I tried the Search using Not-A-Virus.Adware.BHO as the search term, but nothing shows up.

If the infection continues to turn up, it is the complete PATH FILENAME (related to this BHO) that you would want to submit to VirusTotal to see if one of the other vendors has this infection and a possible fix on its radar. Otherwise, we will be left with running randomly selected scans.
