    Unknown Account

I was using process explorer to put a process to sleep and came across an Unknown account, Advanced security setting for msmsgs.exe > account unknown S-123456789 and this account has Special Permissions assigned to it. When I go to control userpasswords2, this account is not listed. Would somebody please check my hijack log.

Hijack online scanner suggest that the following entries are bad and should be fixed. Scan results from CwShredder > CWS.ctfmon32 not present, CoolWebSearch was not found on this system. I tried to update CwShredder and received message > Unable to check for updates. Using version 2.19.0.1099.

I also ran ewido online scanner which took 90 mins. to complete and the only items it found were tracking cookies which I delete at the end of the day when I shutdown Windows.

Hope this helps, below are the entries hijack scanner suggests be fixed.

    Thanks Neal,

New hijack this log version 2.0.2, When I went to add&remove programs windows wouldn't let me delete the program, so I deleted hijack this from program files, registry, and then did a search for hijack this and deleted files found from search.

It looks like AVG is your primary anti-virus program but I see some symantec in your HJT log. So if you want to get rid of the rest of symantec I will include a tool from symantec that will remove all traces of it.

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039

Run hijackthis and click on "scan system only" button and put checks next to these:

Close everything out but hijackthis and click on "fix checked"

    Reboot.

    1. Download this file - COMBOFIX
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Post a new hijackthis log also please.

    Thanks Neal,

Haven't used Norton System Works, for over a year and since it wasn't causing any problems, I just left it alone. When I used the tool to uninstall Norton received error from Symantec.... Uninstall tool can not proceed untill you remove Norton Ghost 9, from ad&remove programs only their is no Ghost in ad&remove programs.... the only button I could click on was exit, so I opened the registry and removed Norton Ghost and all the sub keys containing Ghost. I ran the Uninstall tool and this time it uninstalled Norton System Works or I thought it had. I checked the registry and NSW. was still their and all the subkeys, also I deleted it from Doc&Settings and program files. I don't know what that tool uninstalls if it left all that behind.

I ran the Combo Fix tool and received error... Sed.cfexe has encountered and a problem and needs to close. When Windows rebooted combo fix did produce a log which I will include in this post with a new hijack log. I think when you run combo fix you should turn off your anti-spy, anti-virus programs because Windows Defender and AVG, kept popping up.

    Thanks, for all your help

Never had this happen before.... I logged into the site to reply to your post and when I clicked the preview button, I got the V-B message requesting me to login again. When I logged in again their was a popup saying Suspicious Website, I clicked on check this website and the phishing filter determined that this might be a phishing website, also the URL http://www.d-a-l.com/help/newreply.php?do=postre..... which was highlighted in yellow stating this was a Suspicious Website.... think this could have something to do with running combo fix.

Never heard of that happening before but will notify site owner about it.

Let's run a trojan scanner over your system called AVG anti-spyware, different then your AVG. Combofix log did not show anything.

You may want to printout the following instructions:

Please download AVG Anti-Spyware to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder.
    • Install AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the installer.
    • Follow the prompts. Make sure that Launch AVG Anti-Spyware is checked.
    • On the main screen under Your Computer's security.
      • Click on Change state next to Resident shield. It should now change to inactive.
      • Click on Change state next to Automatic updates. It should now change to inactive.
      • Next to the words Last Update, click on Update now. (You will need an active internet connection to perform this)
      • Wait until you see the Update successful message.
      • Click on Scanner on the toolbar at top of this screen.
      • Click on the Settings tab.
        • Under How to act?
          • Click on Recommended Action and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
        • Under How to scan?
          • All checkboxes should be ticked.
        • Under Possibly unwanted software:
          • All checkboxes should be ticked.
        • Under Reports:
          • Select Automatically generate report after every scan and uncheck Only if threats were found.
        • Under What to scan?
          • Select Scan every file.
      • Close AVG Anti-Spyware without running yet.
Now disable (turn off AVG Anti-Spyware)
    • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon (Bottom right corner of computer screen near clock) and uncheck Start with Windows.
    • Right-click the AVG Anti-Spyware Tray Icon again and select Exit. Confirm by clicking Yes.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG Anti-Spyware.
    AVG Anti-Spyware manual updates.
Download the Full database to your Desktop or to your usual Download Folder and install it by double clicking the file. Make sure that AVG Anti-Spyware is closed before installing the update.
    ______________________________

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.If you can't go to safe mode or run from safe mode, use NORMAL MODE.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.

    Thanks Neal,

I downloaded avg. anti-spyware program from the link you provided in your post and printed out the instructions as you suggested. I made sure that the program was run in safemode and did a full system scan which took 3 hours and 40 minutes which really surprised me, because I don't have that many files on my hard drive, for a scan to take that long even using the anti-virus or anti-spyware scanners online never took more than 1 hour & 50 minutes. When my anti-virus starts in the morning doing a full system scan it only takes 40 minutes, even if you include avg. anti-spyware program and the full database for the updater, I still would not have enough files on my hard drive for a scan to take that long. When the scan finished their were only two buttons I could click on which were > Apply All Actions > New Scan > the save button was greyed out, I didn't realize until later that I had downloaded the paid version of avg. anti-spyware( version 7.5.1.43 trial expries 30 days).

When the program ended all it found were 4 tracking cookies which were medium risk. Double Click > Tribalfusion > Atdmt > Netflame....

I was going to download avg. anti-spyware free version, but I noticed this in the Licensing > AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition is not for use with any type of OEM bundling with software, hardware components, or any other services.

Your use of AVG Anti-Spyware Free Edition shall be in accordance with and is subject to the terms and conditions set forth in the AVG Anti-Spyware Free License Agreement that accompanies AVG Anti-Spyware Free.

Would the above mean that anyone who has an OEM, machine they can not download avg. anti-spyware.

Here is the latest hijack log, I did notice that hijack did not delete this entry.

Neal, I'm running Windows Xp Home, I don't have Microsoft Office or that free program Open Office, so why would Microsoft CFT Loader be running don't you have to have Office, for this to be running on your system. I do have net meeting which lets me listen to Microsoft webcasts would that require CFT loader.

Thanks for all your help, Please let me know about the License Agreement concerning avg. anti-spyware.

It happened again? Went to preview post and got V-B message saying I had to login. When I logged in Windows popped-up saying Suspicious Website and the URL for d-a-l, is highlighted in yellow. When I scroll up the page it says Logged in as Winnipeg, I don't know if it's my machine or the website.

sorry don't know anything about Office or AVG liscense agreement.

Here is the latest hijack log, I did notice that hijack did not delete this entry.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

That could be an indicater of a rootkit infection, not good at all.

Read this below, it is about the Gromozon Rootkit infection you could possibly have.

    http://wiki.castlecops.com/The_Gromo...on_and_Removal

In your first hijackthis log you had these two entries below which are indicators of the infection.

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Plus an unknown user account, this sure points to that Gromozon Rootkit infection.

In the link I provided there is a link to the prevx removal tool for that infection.

Let me know please how that goes and a new hijackthis log.

I notified admin of the login problems you are having and could actually be part of this infection.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    Thanks Neal,

To reply to your post I had to login again, but I didn't get the warning Suspicious website this time or d-a-l, was not highlighted in yellow.

Neal, didn't combo fix have a root kit detector in it because if you scroll down to the post, I entered it said " hidden files 0".

I'm almost sure when I downloaded hijack this, I put the application in program files and the hijack log says it's in program files, but when I open program files it's not their.

When I start Windows in the morning, I run a port scanner called Active ports and I noticed this entry > a72-247-242-179.deploy.akamaitechnologies.com/http

Which I've never seen before, is their anyway to tell how bad this machine is infected by that Gromozon Rootkit Infection and should I try to delete that unknown account.

Do you think I have to worry about using Online banking with this think on my system.

    Thanks, for all your time..

I had to login again to post this and this time d-a-l, popped-up suspicious website highlighted in yellow, even though I haven't logged out, so this is my fourth time logging in.

Neal, I just downloaded the gromozon rootkit removal tool and according to Prevx it's not on my system. When the scan finished which took about 3 seconds to get the results, prevx asked me weather I wanted to run the tool, so I guess it scans first to see if the rootkit is present, but it can scan that fast, I clicked for the tool to run and before you could say Gromozon rootkit removal tool it was finished should I run the tool anyway.
