    Virus attack, need help urgently.

Hey, a virus somehow made its way onto my computer and has disabled my access to the control panel, registry, add/remove programs and task manager among other things, and is causing me all sorts of problems. I've tried all end of things to clean it, posting this Hijackthis log is my last hope lol. If anybody could help I would be overjoyed.

    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Just so you know - you have acquired a backdoor/password stealing capable Trojan that COULD create serious compromises and concerns (passwords, banking, etc.).

PLEASE CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING ISSUES CAREFULLY: Your system has likely been compromised to a point where even cleaning it does not promise you a trustworthy machine. There is a lot of serious concern about the SDBOT infection family which your PC has presently encountered and its known updateable/installable capabilities whether currently in use or not - SEE:
(20K hits for inclusive search terms SDBOT, banking, password, and keylogger).

If you do online banking or have passwords that would be a serious concern in the hands of others (identity theft or compromise of confidential information), then more serious action is likely advisable and potentially warranted (contacting and alerting bank(s), backup user files, do a clean re-install, and change all user passwords while off-line). More often than not they want your PC as a compromised zombie (a botnet/spambot member to do evil deeds) – but who is to know.

Nevertheless, initial and further cleaning may still be warranted to give you some renewed degree of control and then time to more fully consider your options. Let us know how you wish to proceed.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
    • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
    • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the script.
    • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
    • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log.

If you wish to further proceed, do the following as well:

You are not running HijackThis (HJT) from a desired location. You really need to setup a dedicated folder for HJT items to avoid horrible clutter and/or potential lost backup issues.

It's best that the HijackThis tool NOT be located in its current location (particularly on your Desktop or in a TEMP folder). This way you can more easily undo any changes if something goes wrong.
    • Create a new folder in your C: Drive.
    • Name the FOLDER HijackThis (or HJT) such as C:\Program Files\HijackThis or C:\HJT and
    • Move the HijackThis.exe file into the newly created FOLDER.
    • Run HJT from there (and revise your shortcut accordingly).

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

DO NOT RUN ANY OTHER OPTIONS UNTIL REQUESTED TO. This is very important to get an optimal and comprehensive fix. Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

By the way, throughout the scan a window kept popping up saying "Registry changing disabled by Administrator" I'm pretty sure that's the fault of the virus.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (AVG AS).
    • Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the Download now BUTTON.
    • Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
    • Open/Run AVG Anti-Spyware
    • Wait a few moments and AVG Anti-Spyware should Auto update itself (note date of last update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of screen:

    • Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window
      • Click on the Start update button
      • Wait for the update to download and install
  8. This is very important to get the LATEST updates
  9. Click on the Status ICON
    • Under "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are clean)
  10. Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  11. Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions and choose Quarantine
  12. When updating has finished. Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

  13. We will be using this tool in a later step.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a NotePad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site.

    • Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
      • Restart your computer
      • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
      • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
      • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
      • Choose your usual account.

    Running SmitfraudFix – 2nd Part
    • Once in Safe Mode, double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe
Warning: running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.

Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted: "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?"; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process; if it doesn't, please restart it into Normal Windows.

A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
The report can also be found at the root of the system drive, usually at C:\rapport.txt

    • Restart your computer in Safe Mode again.

    AVG Anti-Spyware - 2nd Part
    • Click on Scanner on the toolbar.
    • Click on Complete System Scan to start the scan process.
    • Let the program scan your computer.
    • When the scan has finished, follow the instructions below:
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine
      • Important: Click on the Apply all Actions button (*** This must done before saving the report ***)
      • When the program has finished, it will display the message All actions have been applied.
      • Then click the Save Scan Report button.
      • Click the Save Report as button.
      • Save the report to your Desktop.
    • Right-click the AVG Tray Icon and select Exit.
    • Now copy the report back to this topic.
    • Run a new HijackThis (HJT) scan.
    • Please ensure that you have posted the SmitfraudFix, AVG, and HJT logs in this thread.

Let us know how your PC is now behaving.

Sorry I started the smitfruad scan in Safe Mode and a box kept popping up saying "Registry editing has been disabled by the administrator". Also when I restarted in normal mode I was back to square one as I've once again lost control of my control panel, task manager etc again. a box just pops up "xxxx has been disabled by your administrator". I didn't want to go on with the rest without your consultancy on this back tracking.
