Plz, Need help on Dad's PC

Hello, my Dad has some nasty stuff on his PC so I want to help him out. Internet Explorer will not connect, but Firefox does. I downloaded Spybot and AVG Free for him and tried to download Zonealarm, but it wont install. (it says it cant connect to the server).

Here is what he had from the latest AVG Scan.

    Trojan Horse Downloader.Zlob.JN

    Here is the HJT log.

    Welcome,

These below in bold are sometimes installed on your computer with out your knowledge, if that is the case, uninstalling them would be best:

    Viewpoint Manager (Remove Only)
    Viewpoint Media Player
    Viewpoint Toolbar

    Reboot after uninstalling

    Please download http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Please do not run any other option until asked to do so, Thanks

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post a new hijackthis log and the smitfraudfix log. Thanks.

Run hijackthis and click on system scan only button and put checks next to these:

    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

Close everything out except hijackthis and click on "fix checked"

    Reboot

Download Dr.Web CureIt to the desktop:
    ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/drweb-cureit.exe

    * Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    * This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    * Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    * Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    * Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    * Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    * When the scan has finished, look if you can click next icon next to the files found:

    * If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    * After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    * Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    * Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    * Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.
    * After reboot, post the contents of the log from Dr.Web you saved previously in your next reply. You can use Notepad to open the DrWeb.cvs report.

    New hijackthis log also please.

You have a few items I have never seen before, these:

    O4 - Startup: desktop(2)(2).ini
    O4 - Startup: desktop(2).ini
    O4 - Global Startup: desktop(2)(2).ini
    O4 - Global Startup: desktop(2).ini

After research it appears they should go but let's do it cautiously by doing this:

Click start>run>type in msconfig>hit enter>click startup tab and see if those "desktop" items are checked, if so uncheck them by clicking the "check". Reboot, if things get squirelly recheck them and reboot, otherwise post a new hijackthis log please.

    Also...

    Update Java: Security Issue

    * Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
    * Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

It should have next icon next to it:
    Select it and click Remove.
    * The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6u2 and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.

How is your PC behaving now?

Everything seems fine except I still cant use Internet Explorer, It wont connect to any websites. It seems like something is blocking it from connecting to the internet. I also cannot install Zone Alarm firewall, when it downloads to my desktop and I click to download and install, it says that it cannot find the msi package or patch.

Here is a recent HJT log:

That IE problem may need to be addressed by the folks on the other side of this forum as it may not a malware problem but we will keep digging a little bit.

    Read this:

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/pro.../ie/iefaq.mspx

    http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-623...223619&start=0

What type of connection are you using with your laptop?
    In IE7, Click Tools>Internet Options>Connections Tab.
In the "Dialup and Virtual Private Networks" dialog box, select your connection by left clicking on it once to highlite, then click "Settings".
Select the "Automatically detect settings" check box and click OK.
If there is more then one entry in the Dialup and Virtual Private Networks dialog box, repeat for each.
Next, click the "Lan Settings" button and select "Automatically detect settings" there as well.
    Close IE7, then relaunch.

    Reboot to normal mode

Since Dr. Web found backdoor trojans on your machine, let's run a tool specifically designed for that type of infection, may still be some hanging around some where.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and choose Install to extract it to its own folder on the Desktop. Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
    • Choose your usual account.
    • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
    • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the script.
    • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
    • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum with a new HijackThis log
