Unhappy No desktop no no start menu.

I recently reinstlled my OS just to clear everything. Then I downloaded service pack 2. THen I installed IE 7. After the installation it said to restart, so I did. Unfortunetly now I have no desktop or start menu. From a few google searches it seems as though that this is a commen problem so hopefully its not hard to solve. I downloaded AVG, Spybot and Hijack this. I scanned with AVG and spytbot and I put all the things it said were bad in the vault and I deleted everything that spybot found. Oh and now im getting error saying some windows files are corrupt and to insert my windows xp pro service pack 2 disc. So one of the files in the vault must be needed for windows. I know it's one thats in the vault becasue ythis error came right after I told AVG to put everything in the vault. The problem is that I don't have a windows xp pro service pack 2 disc. All that I have is a windows xp pro disc with no service pack and it won't accept that. Here is my Hijack this log.

It is normally necessary to reboot after each major step. If you miss such a step (often requested by the system) you will likely end up with the kind of issues that you have reported.

Did you reformat your PC hard drive before you started? It is not very encouraging when you discover malware as soon as you did. You need to reinstall XP offline and ensure that you install an antivirus tool before connecting to the Internet.

Yes I had reformatted it. I did again last night while connected to the internet (never thought to disconnect) and I have no problems. Should I update my computer with windows update first or should I get anti virus software first?

Antivirus first (preferably offline or do not stay plugged-in online unnecessarily - huge risk in doing that)
