Re: internet-click--get something different
Neal:
I did the google for softwrap critical error. Two respondents at TechGuy indicate is software and perhaps the remnant of a corrupted download.
Tried ComboFix from your link again. Still no good----I get a dialog box indicating the source is bleepingcomputer.com but save button is not highlighted.
I will try SDfix again to see if it pulls in any "fish" .
When I google Combofix the hits indicate that apparently it is powerful enough that some people have tried to disable its effectiveness. Does that sound like a fair impression.
Tom..................

combofix is a very good tool that removes and or finds bad guys and we sure need it to run, so...
Let's try a little trick, may not work but...
Right click on combofix select rename and rename it something silly like kittycat.exe and press enter and see if you can run it with it renamed.
What is your computer doing now besides that error?
Please download SilentRunners from here:
http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it.
Silent Runners will ask if you want to skip the supplementary search.
Please select 'No' to include them.
The program will take longer to run, but will give us more information.
If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run.
When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop.
The logfile is named 'Startup Programs' by default and will be located where the program is.
Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

Hurrah for Neal....................ComboFix worked as the alias KittyKat.exe!!!!!!!!
I am including the log file for Combo & HJT which were generated immediately after both log files were acquired.
I don't have many problems so I will be curious once you have reviewed the log files if I can/should uninstall ComboFix, SDFix, Dr.Web, & cureit.exe. I would plan to keep HJT application.
Thank you for your diligent assistance and I would welcome your counsel once you have looked these over.
Are Spyware Dr., Ad-Aware, Registry Mechanic & AVG antispyware freeware of any value since I run them somewhat regularly?
Tom
-
Good news,
You forgot to include the combofix log and a new hijackthis log.
Spyware Doctor is a good scanner, don't know much about it, never used it before.
Adaware 2007 seems to be quite buggy yet but lots of people use the older version called Adaware SE and I have used it for years but now use the paid version of Sunbelt Counterspy.
AVG anti-spyware is a tremendous tool against trojans and spyware and I have the free version of that and use it as a on-demand scanner only, I also have super anti-spyware tucked away as a on-demand scanner only.
As far as registry tools I would be very cautious with those, more than one system has been hosed by them.
I'll check back later for the logs and yes you should delete those tools.

Excellent,
Congratulations, your log shows that your SYSTEM IS CLEAN
There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:- Re-hide your System Files and Folders to prevent any future accidents.
Reconfigure Windows XP to hide hidden files:- Click Start. Open My Computer.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options. Select the View Tab.
- Under the Hidden files and folders heading deselect "Show hidden files and folders".
- Check the "Hide protected operating system files (recommended)" option.
- Click Yes to confirm. Click OK.
- Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only- Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser- Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser- Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.
- Reset and Re-enable your System Restore to remove bad files from the backup that Windows makes as no program is able to clean those files:
TO DISABLE SYSTEM RESTORE- Right-click "My Computer", and then left click "Properties".
- Left click on "System Restore Tab"
- Check box beside "Turn Off System Restore"
- Left click on "Apply"
Reboot your System
TO ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE- Remove check mark from "Turn Off System Restore"
- Click on "Apply"
Here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:
Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.
I strongly recommend installing the following applications:- Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.
- Spywareguard <= SpywareGuard offers realtime protection from spyware installation attempts.
- How to use Spybot to remove Spyware <= If you suspect that you have spyware installed on your computer, here are instructions on how to download, install and then use Spybot. Similar to Ad-Aware, I strongly recommend both to catch most spyware.
To protect yourself further:- Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.
- MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your coputer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer
- Google Toolbar <= Get the free google toolbar to help stop pop up windows.
And also see TonyKlein's good advice
So how did I get infected in the first place? (My Favorite)

Moderator:
My computer has remained smooth running and very efficient for quite some time---as you will see from my previous message. However, just yesterday I received a pop-up indicating that the computer was infected and encouraging my downloading Antispyware2008. I was suspicious and ignored the pop-ups.
I did run an old but updated version of Spybot and got a reference to smitfraud-C.. Somewhere read that this is malware and that it is "designed to infect email". I went to your sight and with a search found instructions for download of Malwarebytes. Did the scan and did the recommended fix.
All pop-ups seem to go away. That was yesterday. Today opened email to receive mail and could not complete download. My immediate reaction was that my email may have been infected. Do you think that is possible?
As a precaution I came back to DAL site and following sticky suggestions uninstalled several older versions of Spywareblaster, AVG, Spybot, AdAware and downloaded and ran the newest version of Spybot, P.C.Tools Spyware, and latest version of HiJackThis.
The result is that I now have a HJT log from this morning and with your indulgence am enclosing below. Can you help me?
