Spyware Crush...please HELP!(RESOLVED)
I originally posted this a couple of days ago in the Vista forum as Spyware Crush giving me a hell!
On Saturday I inadvertently allowed an active-x program to run on my notebook and have had no peace since then. Whenever I turn on the computer it tells me that "windows explorer has stopped working" it then goes on to restart explorer and less than 8 seconds later i get the same dialog box. I can not start Norton Internet Security and foolishly removed Ad-aware intending to install the 2007 version only to find that the machine will not install(or uninstall) any programs. On the Windows Help forums the solution described is to install an upto date Digital Vault but I cannot even find the vault as on searching I am told "Program" is not vald.On downloading HJT from this forum it would not install giving the message that the self-extractor could not create C:\HijackThis\HijackThis.exe. I Finally managed to get an executable version from geektogo. Below is my HJT logfile:

When I ran Spybot S&D I kept getting errors which were repeatedly cleaned and before removing Ad-aware I kept getting Spyware crush and some of the entries would not be resolved.
Please help someone?

Please download http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.
Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.
Please do not run any other option until asked to do so, Thanks
Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post a new hijackthis log and the smitfraudfix log. Thanks.
If you have trouble running the above tool try renameing it to something like booger.exe.
To rename right click on tool select rename and type in booger.exe and press enter.
while we are at it...
Please go to hijackthis.exe and right click on it and then click on rename and rename it to foolyou.exe, press enter
and post a new log from the newly renamed hijackthis.exe. Sometimes malware hides from hijackthis.exe.

I have managed to extract and run SmitFraudFix but on running it I get a dialog box saying Unsupported Version.Windows 2000/XP required Press any key to continue. Even after renaming i still get the same message so I cannot post a log from SmitFraudFix. Below is my log from HijackThis before renaming it

After renaming the tool I got the following message; For some reason your ststem denied write access to the HOSTS file.If any hijacked domains are in this fole, HijackThis may not be able to fix this. If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself.
It proceeds to give instructions on how to do this followed by a request to contact the program maker with the error number and after this the tool continues to scan.Below is the resultant log

So are you running Vista?
This tool below, if you can't run from safe mode or have any kind of trouble with it try running from normal mode. Thanks.
Download and install AVG ANTI-SPYWARE
(This is Ewido 4.0 renamed. If you already have Ewido installed, please update to AVG Anti-Spyware which has a special "clean driver" for removing persistent malware.)
After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'. As AVG Anti-Spyware may interfere with some of our other fixes, we are temporarily disabling it's active protection features until your system is clean, then you can reenable them.
Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc
Press "OK".
Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.
Connect to the Internet, go back to AVG Anti-Spyware, select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update successful" message. If you are having problems with the updater, manually download and update with the AVG UPDATER
Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done - DO NOT perform a scan yet.
Note: The new version of AVG Anti Spyware does not work in safe mode. Until a fix is released download and use the AVG_Anti-Spyware_7.5.1.36_Safe_Mode_Registry_Patch.reg workaround patch to correct this. Save to your desktop, double-click on that file and choose "Yes" to merge it into the registry when prompted.
Reboot your computer in "SAFE MODE" using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode". (Note: When run in safe mode, sometimes the GUI is larger than the screen and the buttons at the bottom are partly or completely hidden, making them unaccessible for doing a scan. If this is the case, then you may have to run your scan in normal mode and advise your helper afterwards.)
Scan with AVG Anti-Spyware as follows:
Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.
Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
Under "How to Scan?", "Possibly unwanted software", and What to Scan?" leave all the default settings.
Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and uncheck "Only if threats were found".
Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
When the scan has finished, it should automatically be set to Quarantine--if not click on Recommended Action and set it there.
You will also be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.
IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the Apply all actions button. If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button.
Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done, reboot normally and post the log report in your next response.
Note: Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. Doing so can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.
AVG Anti-Spyware is free for 30 days and all the extensions of the full version will be activated. After the 30 day trial, active protection extensions will be deactivated and the program will turn into a feature-limited freeware version that you can continue to use as an on-demand scanner or you may purchase a license to use the full version. We are installing AVG AntiSpyware with its real-time protection disabled. Once your system is clean you may renable it so you can continue using this feature for the remainder of the trial period.
New hijackthis log also please.

I was unable to run AVG while in safe mode and on trying to run it in normal mode I got told that there was a server problem so I deleted it and reinstalled.Immediately after I performed all the actions you described and ran the tool without closing it and below is the log:

Please tell me if there is anything else I need to do and thank you forthe help so far as the explorer problem is gone at the moment as well.
p.s: just after posting the above I reinitiated the avg resident shield and it has now been disabled and on checking the program is telling me that my subscription has now run out so i think the tool missed out during the scan.

Reason: Noticed that avg shield has been disabled!

Download RogueRemover by Rubber Ducky from www.malwarebytes.org/rr-update/rr-free-
Double-click on rr-free-setup.exe to start the installation of RogueRemover
Click Next then click I agree and finally click Install
Untick Show Readme and click Finish
This will now launch RogueRemover
Close the help window
Click Check for updates
If there are any updates found click Download
Wait for any updates to finish downloading/installing, then click Close in the update window
Click on Scan
If nothing is found, then close RogueRemover
If RogueRemover did find something, it will present a list of detected items
Click Remove selected
Click YES at the prompt
Click Ok when it informs you it's saved a logfile
Wait for removal to complete & then close RogueRemover
Use notepad to open this file
C:\Program Files\RogueRemover\RRLog******.txt
Note: ****** is the time when you ran RogueRemover
Post the contents of that file as a reply to this topic
This is Vista compatiable

Just finished scanning with rogueremover though I had to get it from the vendors website as my browser would not allow me through the link. Below is the resultant log

Hello again Neal. I have decided to get the computer back to the state it came in originally and so would like to know which security programs to use. I was thinking of pc-cillin internet security as i am fed up of norton. i would greatly appreciate any advice you may have and would also want to know if it is safe to do this at the moment without knowing if the infection has been gotten rid of ? thank you.
-
Spycrush is now gone.
pc-cillian is a good program.
Norton is a resource hog and not that good but uninstalling it can be a headache because it leaves so much stuff behind but there is an uninstaller from Norton that will get rid of it for you and here it is:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...05033108162039
Hint:
Download your choice of the malware program to your desktop, do not install yet.
Then download the Norton uninstaller.
Disconnect from the internet, no need to be on the net without protection.
Uninstall Norton then install your new program and back on the net for updates for the new program.
Everything OK?

At the moment everything seems fine but I am just going to take the notebook back to its factory installation. Thank you for all the help.
