    Speeding up my laptop

    Hi

I have a HP Compaq nx6110 laptop, which has become quite slow of late (Especially on Startup). I thought it a good idea to run a Hijackthislog and see if anyone can help me speed it up again.

I have run several anti-virus and ad-aware scans but there hasn't been any improvement of note.
    Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Please remove the current version of HijackThis (it is located in an undesirable location).

Please download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your desktop.
    • Close all applications and windows.
    • Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
    • When the scan is complete, a text file will open - Main.txt
    • Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of Main.txt in your thread in the HijackThis Log Help Forum.
    • An additional text file, Extra.txt, will also be available (by default) in the following FOLDER, C:\Deckard\System Scanner.
    • Please go to that FOLDER and also copy the contents of Extra.txt to your post as well.

Note: some firewalls may warn that sigcheck.exe is trying to access the internet - please ensure that you allow sigcheck.exe permission to do so.

    What DSS will do:
    • Create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
    • Clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.
    • Check some important areas of your system and produce a report for your analyst to review. DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have it installed.
    Post Logs:
    • DSS Scan Results: contents of 1) Main.txt and 2) Extra.txt

Your primary issues may have to do with low available RAM Memory and changing user usage patterns. 256MB of RAM is barely sufficent to load the WinXP operating system. Otherwise, even minor operations may involve a lot of disk swapping slowdowns (memory to disk) to constantly free up needed memory resources. Adding another minimum 256MB may help but a Celeron CPU is often not very adequate (no cache) if multiple windows or processes are being run at the same time.

    Hi

Thanks for the quick feedback. I'm a bit confused about something. I read in a couple of places that Win XP needs a minimum of 128mb to run effectively. But you are saying that 256mb is "barely" enough and that I'll probably need another 256mb. So which is which? Is more memory the only problem that I have? Is there anything I can do about the CPU? The laptop is sold with that CPU.

    Really appreciate your help

Win XP needs a minimum of 128mb to run effectively.
Yes it is ABLE to run with that amount of memory (with significant performance robbing disk swapping). Furthermore, it will not likely perform acceptibly with even more RAM depending on how you use the PC especially if you have a 5400 rpm drive (instead of 7200 rpm). Also, your video is likely onboard video and can be an additional bottleneck issue. You can't do anything about the Celeron CPU - if you buy a 4 cylinder car it simply can't run like an 8 cylinder when you find that the desired performance characteristics are now lacking. If the way you use your PC has changed then the resource requirements will affect how your PC performs or doesn't perform compared to what you are use to.

I regularly have to deal with two (2) Celeron PCs and it is my least productive time on a PC (boot up and scan times) compared to what my regular everyday experience is (even with 512 MB RAM). That is how it is.

Suggest you go to the 'XP Forum' to further discuss what you can reasonably expect from your current Celeron PC.
