Red face Re: Computer bust up

    Hey

Okay i've followed the instructions and now i have jana Runtime environment 6.0 i think. So that's sorted.

There was a problem i had with automatic updates of windows whereby if i turned them on my computer would crash and the 2 minute thing would start again even if i tried to turn it off. Could this be an outstanding problem or just due to the possible problem with the Java system i had?

I'm kinda scared to turn my automatic updates on again cus as i said my computer starts crashing again.

Please let me know what you think!!

    Thanks once again!

I hear your concern. A few more scans are probably a good idea. No one tool finds all potential malware problems.

Click here to download Dr.Web CureIt and save it to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan.
    • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan.
    • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen.
    • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start.
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file.
    • When the scan has finished, see if you can click the icon next to the files found:
    • If so, click it and then click the next icon right below and select Move incurable as you'll see in next image:

This will move it to the %userprofile%\DoctorWeb\quarantaine-folder if it can't be cured. (this in case if we need samples)
    • After selecting, in the Dr.Web CureIt menu on top, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit.
    • Reboot your computer!! Because it could be possible that files in use will be moved/deleted during reboot.

Post the Dr. Web CureIt Results.

Using Internet Explorer run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

    1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
    2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
    3. Enter your Country
    4. Enter your State/Province
    5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
    6. Select either Home User or Company
    7. Click the big Scan Now button
    8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes). You may need to click the ‘Retry again’ BUTTON or you may need to exit and retry at the ‘Scan Now’ BUTTON.
    10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
    11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply

    Hey there

Sorry for the horrendace wait, my computer and I haven't been on the best of terms.

After I eventually managed to get the panda scanner to scan my computer it said i had a rootkit and a single piece of spyware.

It took me ages and many times of booting, rebooting and safe moding with many different scanners and free downloadable trials to finally get rid of them all.

My AVG says all clear, so does the panda one.

I'm afraid the DR.Web one you suggested i download and try started my computer crashing again. So i could not and still cannot give you the scan results for that but everything else has all clear and my spyware scanners are just finding the usual tracking cookies now.

Thank you so much for the help i have recieved and the panda internet scanner is amazing as that is what i went by most of the time to know where to scan and what for.

You've been amazing help and i really can't thank you enough.

A little question or two before this thread is closed.
Do you think it is safe to turn my automatic updates on again now that ALL scanners i use are giving me the all clear?
And my computer still crashes at seemingly random intervals (but usually not after a while once i have rebooted instead of just booting), can you give me any advice on what to do or where to go to get this sorted out?

Once again thank you, you've been ace VopThis. Hurray for you!!!

That is never a good sign and is not very reliable. A failing scan that everyone can normally run is never a good sign. Several suugestions:

TEMPORARY files are both a significant source of clutter and potential hiding places for MALWARE content. Clean out those areas periodically - at least weekly. You can use a tool like CCleaner (or ATF Cleaner):

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

    CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

    Install Options:
    • Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
    • Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.
Do not run CCleaner until requested later.

Run CCleaner in SAFE MODE (reboot tapping the F8 key after the beep).

Select the ‘Options’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), ‘Advanced’ BUTTON, and then UNCHECK the ‘Only delete files in Windows Temp Folders older than 48 hours’ (because the latest download traffic could easily be the bearer of some bad content).

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.
    • Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
    • Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
    • Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
    • Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

Use the System File Checker (SFC) – typical runtime is 30 minutes:
Sometimes when you install third party software, it may overwrite important operating system files. This can cause instability - or worse. Windows XP includes a command line tool that you can use if you think this may have happened (for example, if you get a message box warning that there is a problem with a .dll or the system just seems unstable). Here's how to use it:
    1. Click Start | Run.
    2. In the Run box, type/copy&paste: sfc /scannow (notice the space plus slash).
    3. Windows will scan all protected Windows files to verify that they are intact and in their original versions. If they're not, corrupt, missing or incorrect files are replaced. You may be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD if your Dllcache folder (where Windows keeps a copy of essential system files) has become corrupt or has been deleted.

To avoid the possibility of having to dig out and insert the OS CD, you can copy the i386 folder from the installation CD to your hard disk, and just point Windows there to find the files it needs. For instructions on how to do so, and more info about scannow, see:

A restore point is a backup and you no lnoger have any goto point if you should ever need one. A less than ideal restore point is often better than none at all. Every time you achieve a major improvement in behavior simply create a new more reliable restore point:

    Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

    Hey

    Thanks for the reply!
I do apologise for being so terribly late at replying but my computer has been down for like the past week or so and i had to fix it before i could do anything else.

See it would load up with only the background, no icons, start menu or access to the task manager even after i used Ctrl, Alt & Del.

However my computer is now fixed after i used an old winsock application that i found on my computer. Thank you so very much for the help and effort you put into helping me.

I had tried what you had suggested and nothing came up. But my computer is now in tip top shape so this thread can be closed.

Il'll be sure to check out the vista problems here as i'm upgrading to that soon.

Ready to start helping me on a new OS?

    lol

Thanks and will recommend you to everyone i know!!
    Cheers!
*am goin to bed now xx
