Question Virus Changed 'Run' Commands - how to fix?

Hey, any help given is greatly appreciated.

I had a virus W32.Alcra.F on my computer. I've deleted all the detected files. The removal instructions I found online instruct that after deleting detected infected files you are supposed to go to the RUN windown and type 'cmd.' When I do that, I get an error message saying it's not a valid Win32 application. I am able to get around this by entering in 'command' but this is where the next problem occurs.

The instructions say that from the command window I need to type 'cd %system%' and then 'attrib -s -h netstat.com' and several other things. However, I receive an error message when I enter 'cd %system%' that says it is an invalid directory. Does anyone know how I could maybe bypass this?

I'm using Windows XP and would really like to get my computer issues resolved. I do have AVG installed on my system, as well as Spybot and Ccleaner. I've run many scans and my system is clean otherwise. Please help! Also, regedit does not work either but I've gotten around that by entereing regedt32.

Can you provide a link to the directions you are following?

Alcra has a specific removal tool to get rid of it. Did you run that or just delete the files and registry entries manually?

We'll also want a Hijack This Log.
    1. Let's get a Hijack This log to analyze.
      • Create a new folder on your desktop and name it HJT.
      • Please follow this link to get Hijack This.
      • Save Hijack This to your newly created folder.
      • Run Hijack This.
      • Click Scan and save log file.
      • Copy the log to this thread.

    Let me know.

The link for the removal instructions I was using is http://www.symantec.com/security_res...034-99&tabid=3. I didn't run any specific removal tool. I deleted the files, but then I tried to delete the files from the 'command' window as the removal instructions indicate but I can't because when I enter the command 'cd %system%' I get an error message saying that it is an invalid directory. I tried to delete the values from the registry but they are not there...

    Here is my HJT log:

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Looks like the problem is with Symantec. Line G should read:

    Type cd system

No %% signs. That is to denote a variable. Don't think that is needed here.

The instructions for the removal tool are as follows:
    1. Please update AVG Anti-Spyware.
      • The first thing you need to do is update the detection definition files.
      • From the main AVG AS screen, click on UPDATE in the top menu, then click the Start Update link.
      • After the update finishes (the status bar near the top will inform you of progress), click on the Scanner button in the top menu, then click on the Settings tab.
      • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
      • Under "Reports"
        • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
        • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
      • Close AVG AS.
If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update AVG AS.
      AVG AS manual updates
    2. Please download Brute Force Uninstaller to your desktop.
      • Right click the BFU folder on your desktop, and choose Extract All
      • Click "Next"
      • In the box to choose where to extract the files to,
      • Click "Browse"
      • Click on the + sign next to "My Computer"
      • Click on "Local Disk ( C: ) or whatever your primary drive is
      • Click "Make New Folder"
      • Type in BFU
      • Click "Next", and Uncheck the "Show Extracted Files" box and then click "Finish".
    3. RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra PLUS Remover.
Save it in the same folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Do not do anything with these yet!
    4. Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Highlight Safe Mode and hit enter.
    5. Open AVG AS and click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run.
      • If AVG AS finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
    6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.
    7. Then, please go to Start > My Computer and navigate to the C:\BFU folder.
      • Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe
      • Behind the scriptline to execute field click the folder icon and select alcanshorty.bfu
      • Press Execute and let the program do it’s job. (You ought to see a progress bar if you did this correctly.)
      • Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
      • Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
    8. Reboot into normal windows.

In case you want to give that a go.

Let me know what happens either way and post a new log for review as well.
