    is this trojan a threat?

    Hi, just downloaded a programme called SUPERAntispyware, but halfway through running it my anti virus (Anti vir guard) said that it had found a trojan, and spybot s & d said the same.

    These are the warnings== c:\programfiles\grisoft\...\guard.sys

    TR\rootkit.gen

    I allowed spybot s and d to fix the problem, even though it appears to be a low risk trojan.

    should i uninstall SUPERAntispyware? as anti vir guard and spybot s and d say this is where the trojan is coming from.

    cheers

    Any trojan should be considered an unwelcome invader not to be tolerated - it is like your home is being bugged.

    Fortunately, all tools listed are legitimate tools. Unfortunately, some tools exhibit behaviors that some other tools might correctly flag for all the wrong reasons. These are known as false positives since there is no reasonable expectation that SUPERAntispyware would be responsible for a trojan. The other tools did their job flagging what is normally considered to be suspect behavior. MOst reputatable tools should and do also provide backups for all that they remove because of such possible mistakes that could get made.

    Otherwise, when in doubt always research the filename in question because the multiple arbitrary infection name(s) that multiple vendors assign (for the same infection) are often very unhelpful.

    does this mean it's okay to let my anti virus put it into quarentine each time it finds it? or should i say thinks it finds it.

    well at least i know that spybot etc are doing there job.

    many thanks for your help, much appreciated

    The item in question should not need to be quarantined because it is a false positive issue. If the suspect issue is constantly being flagged, then that makes using SUPERAntispyware a less useful experience and process, and somewhat unusable on a consistant basis until the vendors involved sort it out.
