First thing I would do is run hijack this and let the spyware moderators take a look at your hijack log, their should be a thread called "Before posting a hijack this log, which will explain everything you need to do.
Have you tried resetting your folders.
Go To > Start > Windows Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > General > Restore Defaults(if that doesn't work) Click on the view tab...if you have remember each folders view setting checked, Uncheck it see if this helps.
Since you have Xp, you could restore your system back to a day you had no problems and see if that fixes the problem.
Go To Start > Run box type: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
This will open the program System Restore.. click the option restore my computer to an eariler time.. highlight a date and click next...Windows will shut down and restart...You should get a message your system has been successfuly restored or Windows could not restore your system..If the latter is the choice just pick another restore point.
If all that doesn't work then try repairing Internet Explorer.
Go To Start > Run box type: appwiz.cpl when add & remove programs opens scroll down to Internet Explorer...highlight IE click change/remove their should be a dialog box that says you can repair Internet Explorer.
If this is spyware related you have to remove the spyware, so I would post a hijack log and let the experts take a look at it and they will tell you how to proceed.
