It started with a Google Toolbar buffer overrun detection. Then, a lot of programs needed to be closed, and CPU usage ran to 100%. I used AVG, antispyware and pandaonline scans. It seems quicker, but my desktop icons have now changed to .lnk extensions and I still get a lot of problems with programmes needing to close on booting up

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here

SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).



Delete TEMPORARY FILES: Now, use CCleaner to hunt down the most common temporary file locations and the temporary file clutter contained therein (and of possible malware hiding places):

Run CCleaner .

FIRST-TIME USE:
Select the ‘Options’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), ‘Advanced’ BUTTON, and then UNCHECK the ‘Only delete files in Windows Temp Folders older than 48 hours’.

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.

• Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
• Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
• Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
• Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

***** Clean out the Recycle Bin for items removed below, ONLY once you have regained the full functional use of your PC.




Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):

After doing all the actions, I noticed two browned out files on my desktop, one a .tmp file and one a word file.

Also, I am still getting four programmes that "encountered a problem and need to close: these are Uniblue Registry Booster, Messenger, Ipod Service Module and EPSON service module.

But worse than that, I'm now getting the blue screen of death! First happened after I downloaded a new last.fm update and it crashed on me. Then, happened whilst downloading the update, then finally, I decided not to download the update, so it gave me the blue screen whilst I was updating some podcasts on iTunes.

I noticed two browned out files on my desktop, one a .tmp file and one a word file.

Such files are always potential infection candidates.

now getting the blue screen of death! First happened after I downloaded a new last.fm update and it crashed on me. Then, happened whilst downloading the update, then finally, I decided not to download the update, so it gave me the blue screen whilst I was updating some podcasts on iTunes.

You cannot expect business as usual on a sick PC. Installs and updates have a higher tendency to get corrupted or to create worse unknown and/or related problems.


What is a 'fm update'.


Your latest log showed two (2) running instances of HijackThis - doing fixes while that was the case could go badly (closing all running applications is advisable for good reason). Was SuperAntispware or Uniblue also running at the time - that could be a potential source of interference?



Your best option may be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes?

Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.

Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.
