Programs Hanging Comp
OK, here goes...My system recently started having some major problems with it hanging up and having to re-boot the system
. Initially, it started when I was downloading anything form the internet. I found out that it had to do with my McAfee 8.0 causing it. Now, any time I try to play any of my games, i.e. Klingon Academy or FFXI, it will do the same. I have completely re formatted the hard drive and FDisked it twice, and it still occurs. ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
System stats:
AMD Athlon XP 2600+
1.048 GB RAM, DDR, PC2700, 333 mhz
Geoforce FX 5200, 128 MB, PCI wideo
Windows XP, SP1, all updates installed
M848A PC DDR 333 Motherboard
Onboard sound
All hardware has current drivers, including BIOS

Hey Redbeardtech,
The first thing I would rule out is overheating, can you first check the internal component and PSU fans for excessive dirt and make sure there is plenty of ventilation inside the PC. How long did the PC work fine for before this issue started to happen?
-
PC is running fine at around 107-109F, well below the spec limit. This started when I moved to my new house here, but I already re-seated everything before and after this started. I also installed a number of new things like a new floppy, a V.92 external USB modem with NetOnHold, McAfee AV 8.0....here is my HJT list if it will help with resolving this ANNOYING issue...

Hey
Ive moved this post here so that our resident HJT gurus can check it out for you, once thats done we can continue to troubleshoot if nessasary.
-
There's nothing there to indicate a problem. Then again there's nothing there to indicate any anti-virus software which is a problem. I suggest you run one of the following on-line virus scans: Housecall or Bitdefender.
-
I removed my AV to do more testing. I know thats not it since I already re-partitioned and re-formated the drive twice. Wondering if it could be an ActiveX issue....
-
Thanks Nirvana
Have you looked into any BIOS updates for the Mobo Redbeardtech?
-
Already updated to the current version for BIOS...flashed it yesterday. Maybe I should just re-format the entire thing again and start with one item at a time.....good waste of 2 days of work though...UGH
-
Hmmm, well if your game for that I would suggest stripping the PC of any non essential hardware. Keep it simple, just start with Windows and then run a few tests like installing a game and running that etc I'm thinking its got to be hardware but its one of them things where it really could be so many things. Also I would keep the RAM down to bare minimum like 1 stick of 512 or whatever you have.

Hey Redbeardtech, any news on this? did you have any luck?
