Windows Explorer Runtime Error!

    Exclamation Windows Explorer Runtime Error!

On my computer everytime I try to browse a folder on my hard drive I get this extremely annoying error message:

    "Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library

    Runtime Error!
    Program: C:\WINDOWS\EXPLORER.EXE

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate in an unusual way.
Please contact the application's support team for more information."

I am quite desperate as I have tried everything I can think off. I have tried to follow a few of the postings on this subject but can't see a fix???
I have Dell Latitude D410 installed with XP and running fine for 12months. I would have drastically tried to reinstall XP but I can't even copy any files off to back up my data. The Restore does not work, I don't know why?? I think the problem started when I tried to remove Norton AntiVirus without success.

I have attached the HiJackThis Log file (I think) and have to admit I do not understand it

    Please Help Me!!

I have followd your instructions explicitly in the Spyware, Adware, Viruses and Hijackthis section recommended by Neal to ensure more efficient info. I downloaded and used Spybot, Adaware SE and re-run HJT. The new log is attached. I aleady have AVG installed and updated and have scanned my system. Nothing seems to fix this problem.......

Did you make a recent change by adding an antivirus tool. You appear to be running two (2) real-time (always on) antivirus tools - AVG and Norton. If so, they will conflict and cause problems - and one of them will need to be disabled or uninstalled to improve matters.

I had Norton Protection Center installed from BT Yahoo and felt it was very slow so I decided to uninstall it through the normal Add/Remove programs. It did not appear to fully unistall, the Add/Remove did not show it as on the system. I then installed AVG 7.5 and that is about when I got the problem. I could see files from Norton remaining like live update but no way of removing them because Windows Explorer had this Runtime Error problem.
Do you suggest I uninstall AVG???

    Thanks and Regards

    Peter

Further to above, I have now uninstalled AVG and rebooted. I attach the HJT log. Problem still persists.
Many thanks in advance for your support.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
An incomplete uninstall of an always-on (real-time) antivirus tool/suite can create horrible difficulties and problems. Potentially, the removal process may never be complete and PC never quite back to normal. Now, you probably have redundant CPU intensive components and competing/incompatible running processes. Alternately, if you uninstall AVG, you may be able to then backup all your critical user files.

Norton does have a 'removal tool' to assist in the cleanup process (frequently necessary, unfortunately). However, many of us have also found it necessary to use several registry cleanup tools to aid in the process (for numerous orphan and missing file Norton registry references):

You can try the 'removal tool' and see how it goes. May be best to first consult with your ISP and see what assistance or suggestions they may have:
