    Question Trojan j.exe (RESOLVED)

AVG is reporting finding a trojan, named j.exe.

Initial location was c:\ but I used 'heal' on AVG and it promptly found it in the Deleted Items folder, from where I deleted it.

Re-ran AVG, it appeared in Restore, so I turned off Restore, re-ran AVG, healed and deleted, re-booted, turned Restore back on and re-ran AVG. Nothing found. I checked for updates to AVG on each occasion before running AVG.

That was on Tuesday the 21st, re-appeared on Wednesday the 22nd.

According to AVG this morning, it's currently living in c:\_restore\temp\A0003090.CPY

AVG calls it Trojan horse Generic2.IMT.

The only reference I've found on the web is here

    http://virusinfo.prevx.com/pxparall....C=c4c355703663

However they would like me to download their tool to repair and I don't know anything about them so am in no rush for another virus-fixing tool.

    Ran BitDefender, nothing found.

Oh well. Ran CCleaner and cleared out a heap of odd looking stuff (mostly games downloaded by kids) and something called WW95, no idea what that was.

Re-ran AVG, all clear. Downloaded updates from AVG last night, ran a full scan overnight. Still all clear.

So it seems this can be considered resolved.

P.S I did quit all running apps and had no internet connection, plus turned off System Restore, when I ran Ad-Aware & CCleaner.

    plus turned off System Restore
Several things to keep in mind:

As WINDOWS ME ages, many current fix solutions are not often available for use in that environment - aways check. 'Prevx' only runs in XP/NT.

ONLY turn off System Restore as generally one of your last possible procedures. A corrupt 'restore point' could become a saving needed option and is better than no backup point to go to at all.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Take your point re- Prevx. My own system runs XP but this is my g'friend's PC, so not really thinking.

First time I've been advised to not turn off System Restore though. Although AVG was healing the problem the trojan continued to reside in the Restore folder. Pretty much everything I've ever used in the past (for 2000 & XP) has advised turning off System Restore, booting in Safe Mode and running anti-virus programs, then re-starting System restore, porior to connecting to the internet again.

It's incidental in this case, as there wasn't a back-up point to restore to (no idea why) and more iportantly, there is nothing of consequence on this computer, as all important documents are backed up to memory stick and kept on another PC.

Many thanks for reading and commenting.
