MSn.CON
A couple of weeks ago my homepage was hijacked by msn.com. I have tried everything aadware, nortons, S&D... practically everything to get my homepage to the one I want... Google.co.uk. But every time i set it to google, and apply.... it goes straight back to Msn .com.
I started with the basics (tools>>internet options>> but nothing
I was so frustrated that I renamed the registry entry StartPage to startPage1 to sto it displaying, so now when i click a new tab in IE7 it displays about:blank. This was because StartPage would not save as google. It just reverted BACK to msn.
I uninstalled IE7 and went back to IE6 but that never resolved the problem. i even uninsalled IE6..... but the problem came back. Im furious that I have to have a microsoft homepage intead of the one I want.
I was told by a buddy to download HijackThis and come here...
Another strange thing is I am unable to load in safe mode (F8) and i was also told that i should see 6 tabs in msconfig. I only have 5 . The BOOT.INI tab is not there.

As you can see Hijackthis has looked for Start Page but not able to find it as i have renamed it Start Page1. This is where the homepage is directed to msn.com. As I said when i edited it to google it would not save, and reverted back to Msn.

I hope you guys can help me to restore my homepage to something i want, and not what Microsoft want me to have.

Do you know what the following application is for?:
F:\Documents and Settings\Peter\Desktop\2142cc_Client_1.4.2493\BF2C C.exe
Your issues appear to be consistent with restrictions being placed on Internet Explorer (see items below from your HijackThis LOG). Try fixing those items if you did not set those restrictions.
SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKLM\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present
Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.
POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

I run a battlefield 2 server manager which controls the settings in the online game. i have had 2142cc_Client_1.4.2493\BF2C C.exe
installed for a long time.
I followed your instructions using the Fix option and restarted the computer. The problem is still there im afraid.
Here is the log after the restart.

I found the answer to the Browser... Nortons. I cant believe it was such a silly thing to miss....

But it still does not explain why I cant boot in Safe Mode and where my BOOT.INI tab has gone in msconfig... Does the HJ log give any indication as to why I cant safe boot load. Because when the time comes I may really need it.
Regards

Did you disable something in 'Load Startup Items' (check mark greyed out)? Also, you need to consider what configuration setting changes you may have made in your security programs such as in Norton to have created, impacted and retained such internet restrictions. This is not a default behavior coming from a Microsoft conspiracy. Otherwise, this issue is not going to be easily resolvable.
The 'current user' (CU) portion of such entries are now gone but the 'local machine' (LM) entries still persist.
Your best option may be to try a system restore point (if available) to a date before any known problems or before you started performing any recent fixes?
Click on Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Check Restore my computer to an earlier date> Click Next.
Choose the date before you performed any recent fixes and click Next and Next again.
Once rebooted, please try your Internet connection and post a revised HJT log. Do not uninstall anything.

Your problem may be caused by having loaded XP to the F:\ Drive. Do you have 'boot.ini' located in C:\ or F:\? There may be a problem with the BIOS boot order settings or you may need to make a copy of it in the correct initialization path (normally C:\):

XP is installed on the F drive which is the primary drive (drive 0). Its just C by another name. Im unable to change it because when I try to it says it is unable to because it is the boot volume.
But thank you for your replies I will now venture over to the XP forum regarding the BOOT.INI problem.
