Symptoms : PC running slow, frequently freezes. Often get "program not responding" message regardless of program (ie doesn't just happen on specific programs). When requested to close down vary rarely does on its own, usually requires power button. Have recently (last month or so) downloaded PCTools Antivirus, Registry Mechanic & Spyware Doctor. Think this may have conflicted with McAfee Security Centre which was due for renewal, so removed McAfee (as much as it would allow). Problems persist. AdAware & Spybot tell me I'm clean, PC tools software tell me I'm clean (Spyware Doctor says "backdoor" was quarantined but still highlights it on each scan. Downloaded Zonealarm to see if it could find anything. No joy. At a loss as to what to do next. Any help very much appreciated. Hijack this to follow ;

To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

CCleaner

Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Before first use:
Select Options then Advanced.
UNCHECK "Only delete files in Windows Temp folder older than 48 hours"

Click on CCleaner to start it. Then click "Run Cleaner", just use the windows tab up front by default.


Then Reboot (Exit)


Then...


Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

Click the "Save list..." Button.

Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply plus a new hijackthis log.

Firstly may I say thanks for looking into this problem for me. Much appreciated.
I initially tried to uninstall McAfee from the add/remove in the control panel but it never seemed to work properly. I had been searching for advice by reading solutions given to problems indicated on this (and other) sites and I think (cos my head is now a bit muddled) that I went into configsys and tried to prevent them starting up. It was really McAfee Antivirus that I wanted to stop because I thought the issue was incompatability between it & PCTools which I have recently subscribed to. Sorry I can't be much clearer than that.

I did as your post requested. 2 things to note; ZoneAlarm gave message " CCleaner was prevented from changing the behavior of Zonealarmpro by modifying the file : WINDIR\Internet Logs\ ZALog.txt" and when I rebooted although the pc "saved my settings" it did not shutdown and after ~8 minutes I pressed the power off button.

Are you wanting to remove all components of mcafee? If you have a mcafee firewall and zonelabs conflicts will mostly certainly occcur.


Spyware Doctor and Windows Defender may be conflicting also, might consider removeing one of those.





INSTRUCTIONS FOR USING AVG ANTI-SPYWARE in "NORMAL MODE"


Will not conflict with Spyware Doctor or Windows Defender and is easily uninstalled after we are done with it.


Download and scan with AVG Anti-Spyware
1. After download, double click on the file to launch the install process.
2. Choose a language, click "OK" and then click "Next".
3. Read the "License Agreement" and click "I Agree".
4. Accept default installation path: C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5, click "Next", then click "Install".
5. After setup completes, click "Finish" to start the program automatically or launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double-clicking its icon on your desktop or in the system tray.
6. The main "Status" menu will appear. Select "Change state" to inactivate 'Resident Shield' and 'Automatic Updates'.
7. Then right click on AVG Anti-Spyware in the system tray and uncheck "Start with Windows".
8. Go to Start > Run and type: services.msc

* Press "OK".
* Click the "Extended tab" and scroll down the list to find AVG Anti-Spyware guard.
* When you find the guard service, double-click on it.
* In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
* From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Manual".
* Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close the Services window.

9. Select the "Update" button and click "Start update". Wait until you see the "Update succesfull message". If you are having problems with the updater, manually update with the AVG Anti-Spyware Full database installer from HERE .

Once the updates are installed do the following:
1. Click on the "Scanner" button and choose the "Settings" tab.

* Under "How to act?", click on "Recommended actions" and choose "Quarantine" to set default action for detected malware.
* Under "How to Scan?" check all (default).
* Under "Possibly unwanted software" check all (default).
* Under "What to Scan?" make sure "Scan every file" is selected (default).
* Under "Reports" select "Automatically generate report after every scan" and UNcheck "Only if threats were found".

2. Click the "Scan" tab to return to scanning options.
3. Click "Complete System Scan" to start.
4. When the scan has finished you will be presented with a list of infected objects found. Click "Apply all actions" to place the files in Quarantine.

IMPORTANT! Do not save the report before you have clicked the "Apply all actions button". If you do, the log that is created will indicate "No action taken", making it more difficult to interpret the report. So be sure you save it only AFTER clicking the "Apply all actions" button?

5. Click on "Save Report" to view all completed scans. Click on the most recent scan you just performed and select "Save report as" - the default file name will be in date/time format as follows: Report-Scan-20060620-142816.txt. Save to your desktop. A copy of each report will also be saved in C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\Reports\
6. Exit AVG Anti-Spyware when done and submit the log report in your next response.

Close all open windows, programs, and DO NOT USE the computer while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning. If Explorer or other programs are open during the scan that means certain files will also be in use. Some malware will insert itself and hide in areas that are "protected" by Windows when the files are being used. This can hamper AVG Anti-Spyware's ability to clean properly and may result in reinfection.

Sorry for delay in replying, explanation to follow.
I removed the programs Azureus, Bicomet, BitTorrent & uTorrent and rebooted.
Followed your excellent instructions for AVG, downloaded and set it off scanning. When I came back to the pc AVG appeared to have closed down as it was not running. I opened it up and looked for a scan report but there was none available.
The pc was in slo-mo mode again so I switched it off/on to start from scratch. Just for info, from the black "Windows XP" screen to the blue "windows is starting up" screen took about 1.5 mins whereas it used to be almost immediate.
Started AVG scanning again (checked your instructions again first).
Because I have a few external hard drives this takes quite a while. Anyway AVG has been scanning for ~14hrs and seems to be stuck at a file E:\VTS_01_4.vob. which I think belongs to a movie. There is also a number of windows prompts which may be related ; "windows was unable to save all the data for file E:\$Mft the data has been lost. This error may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere" Same for file "E:\System Volume information".
However, while AVG seems stuck it has found two bits of malware.
Under Results/Preview it states "Trojan.Pakes" and "Backdoor.Theef.111" and under Progress it states "infected objects 4".
I tried to see if there was a way to quarantine these but I think the scan needs to finish so I'm not sure what to do now.
I tried to advise you but when I attempted to connect to your site my pc now says "the page cannot be displayed...... refresh/internet options etc." so I've had to use a different pc (in work) to advise you of the latest status. Please bear with me if I struggle to get back to you in good time.
On your question of getting rid of all of McAfee I would say yes please. However, the reason I went for PC Tools was because McAfee didn't trace the virus but it seems neither has PC Tools. As Spybot & AdAware didn't trace it either how do I set up a security system which avoids virus software conflicts but still gives max security? Is AVG the one to go for?

This is where I am at the moment, awaiting your next instruction. Of course, Thanks for the help.

Please go to hijackthis.exe and right click on it and then click on rename and rename it to foolyou.exe
and post a new log from the newly renamed hijackthis.exe. after the online scan below.



Go here BitDefender and run an online scan with BitDefender (you will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan). When the ActiveX Control has loaded, click on "Click here to scan" and grab a coffee.

When BitDefender completes the scan, select the "Detected Problems" tab. Click on "Click here to export scan". Save the file as an HTML to your Desktop. Then click on the saved file and allow it to open with your browser. Go to Edit - Select All then copy/paste that log back here. Post back and let us know what it found (post the log).

And post a new HJT log also..newly renamed

did everything as requested. Doesn't seem that McAfee has gone (icon still on desktop & quick flash of security centre page on start up of pc).
Results of other instructions attached apart from 1 minor deviation. Becuase iof the trouble with Drive E during AVG scan I switched it off before the Bitdefender scan. As it is the scan took 22 hours (long cup of coffee). I will switch off the other drives and then scan E while awaiting next instructions.
Things are moving along slowly but I feel you're having some success. Again thanks.

Go to Start > Run and type in Services.msc then click OK

Click the Extended tab.

Scroll down until you find McAfee WSC Integration.

Click once on the service to highlight it.

Click Stop

Right-Click on the service.

Click on 'Properties'

Select the 'General' tab

Click the Arrow-down tab on the right-hand side on the 'Start-up Type' box

From the drop-down menu, click on 'Disabled'

Click the 'Apply' tab, then click 'OK'

Next:

Please run HijackThis and click Config -> Misc Tools -> Delete an NT service. In the Delete window, type McAfee WSC Integration and press OK. OK any prompts, close HijackThis, and restart your computer.

Hi Neal,

As requested, almost.
HJT gave prompt [Service "McAfee WSC Integration" was not found in the registry. Make sure you entered the short name of the service., vbExclamation] so I checked the HJT file and under services found (McTskshd.exe) and (mcupdmgr.exe) which I deleted. I couldn't find anything related to WSC Integration though.
