Outlook Express settings changed on reboot (RESOLVED)

I have been having this problem the last couple of weeks. Every time I restart, my server settings for Outlook Express (in Accounts-Properties) are changed and I have to manually re-set them in order to receive my mail. My ISP told me that it was a spyware issue and tried to sell me their anti-spyware plan. I've downloaded Ad-Aware but it hasn't helped.

    Any help would be appreciated.

There were no malware issues evident in your HijackThis LOG.

Lets see if anything turns up in the following scan:

We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (AVG AS - formally known as Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 - uninstall any previous version first).
    • Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the Download now BUTTON.
    • Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
    • Open/Run AVG Anti-Spyware
    • Wait a few moments and AVG Anti-Spyware should Auto update itself (note date of last update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of screen:

    • Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window
      • Click on the Start update button
      • Wait for the update to download and install
  5. This is very important to get the LATEST updates.
  6. Click on the Status ICON
    • Under "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are clean)
  7. Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  8. Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions and choose Quarantine
  9. When updating has finished. Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

  10. We will be using this tool in a later step.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    ______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start AVG Anti-Spyware , and run a full scan:
    • Click on the default Status ICON and select the Scan now LINK.

      OR

    • Click on the Scanner ICON . Select the Scan TAB.

      • Select Complete System Scan. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin to scan your system.

    • If AVG Anti-Spyware finds anything it will list them in the Preview WINDOW:
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
      • Select Apply all actions at the bottom of the window (and the items found will be quarantined – and recoverable, if any items are needed back).

    • When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found.
    • Copy and paste the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results into your next post.
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

REBOOT and let us know how your PC is now behaving (if fixes were made in the above scan)– any changes in behavior.

My ISP told me that it was a spyware issue and tried to sell me their anti-spyware plan.
Neither of your last two (2) scans is indicative of suspect contributing spyware (for your given issue) and may simply be a 'canned' (unsupportable) answer from your ISP that may not be correct. You could take their plan and likely still not resolve your issues.

You might want to review your setup steps in our 'XP FORUM'. We could also try clearing out all 'restore points' as a last possible step in case your PC is continually reverting back (for some unknown reason) to a point before your OE setup steps. We will leave that for last.

For now, you could run several additional scans, if you wish:

Using Internet Explorer run Panda's ActiveScan from here and perform a full system scan.

    1. Once you are on the Panda site click the "Scan your PC" button
    2. A new window will open...click the big "Check Now" button
    3. Enter your Country
    4. Enter your State/Province
    5. Enter your e-mail address and click send
    6. Select either Home User or Company
    7. Click the big Scan Now button
    8. If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    9. It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It will take a couple minutes). You may need to click the ‘Retry again’ BUTTON or you may need to exit and retry at the ‘Scan Now’ BUTTON.
    10. Click on "Local Disks" to start the scan
    11. Post Panda scan results in your next reply

Please do an online scan (scan only tool) with Kaspersky WebScanner
    [Internet Explorer required]

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        - Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        - Scan Archives
        - Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    I think it's fixed!

After reading your post, I searched through the XP forum and found an old thread with the same problem and tried the suggestion there. It seems as though my anti-spam program was causing my account settings to change to some default setting on re-boot. I've disabled the anti-spam and re-booted a couple of times, and the problem hasn't happened again since.

Thank you so much!! You guys are amazing. I'm very grateful.
