    Adware, Malware or Virus?

Hi All, I am new to this forum but I recently had a problem that seems to be common. I have contracted some sort of adware, malware or virus. It attached itself to my IE browser and I could not get rid of it, it would also prevent me from accessing anything via IE and would not allow me to change the homepage..... I used several adware programs including, 'Ad-Aware, Spybot search and destroy, AVG anti-spyware and Ashampoo. All found some adware running and allowed me to fix. I have run AVG virus software all of which have been updated and it found a trojan. I then downloaded and run WinPatrol and went through each entry and checked it against google, deleting where I thought it was needed. I am stiil not sure my machine is clean so I have downloaded and run hijackthis and attached is the log........

Please couild anyone tell me if there is anything there that needs an additional fix and whether it would be worth just reformatting the whole computer back to its original state.

Thank you in anticipation of your help.... Bigsey

Hi, thanks for the swift reply. So you think then that nothing on the log will track my passwords or hack my laptop when accessing shopping sites, bank sites etc..?

In answer to your question about removing unnecessary crap, yes remove all that does nothing to enhance my machine....... Can you tell me via this forum or should I post on another what startup programs are vital and which one I can shut down at startup?

    Thanks again..

    Bigsey

We can look a little deeper. How is your computer behaving after all the scans you done?

Download Silent runners.Vbs post the log it creates please
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_scriptuse.html click yes to the suplimentry searchs
Wait until there is a All Done message !!, Then open and post the log next to it.
Your antivirus script protection might interfear or alert, please allow it to run after a bit box will say done.

    Try running this:

    Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

    Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt

While we are waiting run this program just in case:

    Please download http://siri.urz.free.fr/Fix/SmitfraudFix.zip (by S!Ri)
Extract the content (a folder named SmitfraudFix) to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Please do not run any other option until asked to do so, Thanks

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool"; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

Please post a new hijackthis log and the smitfraudfix log. Thanks.

Neal is away for the next few days. I can continue to assist you if you wish.

Please print out or copy these instructions/tutorial to Notepad as the internet will not be (while in Safe Mode) available to you at certain points of the removal process. Make sure to work through all the Steps in the exact order in which they are listed below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before moving on with the fixes.

Download and install AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 (AVG AS - previously known as Ewido anti-spyware 4.0) (uninstall any previous version first).
    • Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the Download now BUTTON.
    • Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
    • Open/Run AVG Anti-Spyware
    • Wait a few moments and AVG Anti-Spyware should Auto update itself (note date of last update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of screen:

    • Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window
      • Click on the Start update button
      • Wait for the update to download and install
  9. This is very important to get the LATEST updates
  10. Click on the Status ICON
    • Under "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are clean)
  11. Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  12. Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions and choose Quarantine
  13. When updating has finished. Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

  14. We will be using this tool in a later step.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    ______________________________

Open the SmitfraudFix Folder, then double-click smitfraudfix.cmd file to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

A reboot may be needed to finish the cleaning process, if you computer does not restart automatically please do it yourself manually. Reboot in Safe Mode.

The tool will create a log named rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: or partition where your operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

    • On the General tab, click Delete Cookies under Temporary Internet Files, and then click OK.
    • Click on the Programs tab then click the Reset Web Settings button. Click Apply then OK.
    • Click OK.
Next Click Start, click Control Panel and then double-click Display. Click on the Desktop tab, then click the Customize Desktop button. Click on the Web tab. Under Web Pages you should see a checked entry called Security info or something similar. If it is there, select that entry and click the Delete button. Click Ok then Apply and Ok.

Empty the Recycle Bin by right-clicking the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then clicking Empty Recycle Bin.

    • Click on the default Status ICON and select the Scan now LINK.

      OR

    • Click on the Scanner ICON . Select the Scan TAB.

      • Select Complete System Scan. AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin to scan your system.

    • If AVG Anti-Spyware finds anything it will list them in the Preview WINDOW:
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
      • Select Apply all actions at the bottom of the window (and the items found will be quarantined – and recoverable, if any items are needed back).

    • When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found.
    • Copy and paste the AVG Anti-Spyware scan results into your next post.
    • Close AVG Anti-Spyware.

Hi, Sorry for the delay, I have been away and busy with college work too.

I have carried out all the things listed above and the results are below. Before I list them I have had a few problems today. I ran AVG anti spy and it detected many cookies but one detection was malware, trojan horse downloader.zlob.fci I have run before the series of checks above adaware, spybot, avg anti-spyware, and started to run AVG anti virus. At the point I suspended the virus search it had detected no virus but had detected changes e.g. file: kernel32.dll result/infection: change Path: c:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll also File: Shell32.dll Result/Infection: Change Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll

I ran AVG anti spy and it detected many cookies but one detection was malware, trojan horse downloader.zlob.fci
The Zlob infection should have been addresses by the smitfraudfix. Re-run AVG Anti-Spyware, if unsure.

started to run AVG anti virus. At the point I suspended the virus search it had detected no virus but had detected changes e.g. file: kernel32.dll result/infection: change Path: c:\WINDOWS\system32\kernel32.dll also File: Shell32.dll Result/Infection: Change Path: C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll
I have seen this unhelpful determination before. Such changes could easily be the result of 'critical updates'. If the scan can't determine those files to be bad and you have no clear remaining issues, you are likely OK.
