SVCHost Eating RAM when I run Windows Update (RESOLVED)

    Hey People,

    I have the following problem:
When I click on WIndows Update it opens IE and gets to the page where the Active X controls check what updates I have and what I need. The green bar swoops across (sometimes it does not).

This is where the problem begins. The CPU Usage shoots up to 100% and SVCHOST starts eating up RAM. It shoots up to a point where I have very little RAM left (like about 70-80 MB). This is the point where the computer gets stuck on Windows Update (it does not hang though). I do not get another screen where it usually told me what updates were available for me to download. The other features keep working (albeit slowly) and nothing happens on the Update Front. It stays like this till I manually kill wuauclt.exe. The CPU comes back to idle (1-2%) however, the SVCHOST still maintains excessive RAM usage. It is reset only after I do a restart. (Earlier I would kill SVCHOST.)

I posted a new thread in the XP Section detailing this problem and got a reply from Jephree who directed me here. He asked for a few inputs which I provided there itself. If it might help, here is a link to that thread: http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread...325#post121325

Also, I checked up a link where the problem seems the same. Neal offered a solution there, but it seems I do not have the C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache\spoolsvc.exe file so I could not try out the solution to see if it fixed my problem. The link to Neal's solution is:
    http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread...hlight=SVCHOST

I have AVG Free 7.1.408 and it showed no viruses. Besides this I have windows defender.

Further, Jephree asked me to post my Hijack Log. This is it -

    Hey Vincent (VOPThis),

First Up thanks for your help. My Windows Update is fixed and is running fine now. I owe you one for this.

Here is what I did - I do not have Norton Antivirus. I uninstalled it a long time ago. I only have Norton Internet Security. I have NOT uninstalled Norton Internet Security. Though, I have used HijackThis to remove the registry entries that you wanted me to remove. Please go through my Hijack Log again to cross check if there are still any problems left. Also, please advise if I should uninstall Norton Internet Security. (I kind of like it because I work on a university network and It has prevented many Attacks on my comp).

    Here is my Hijack Log

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Nice to hear you are back to normal.

Norton Internet Security should be OK as long as there is no conflicting active process (real-time) functionality duplication of such things as antivirus and firewall processes - only one instance of each.

Your next step is to ensure that your JAVA remains up-to-date:

Your system has an outdated version of Sun Java that could create serious security exposure issues for your PC.

    Update your Java.

Older JAVA versions have vulnerabilities that malware can and are using to infect systems.

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components.
    • Close any programs you may have running, ESPECIALLY your web browser
    • Click Start > Control Panel.
    • Click Add/Remove Programs.
    • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE) in the name.
    • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
    • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove all versions of Java.
    • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.

Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8 or higher, and install it to your computer.

New Version should show as (HijackThis log):

    C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.5.0_08\… or higher
