Re: Can anyone help me to remove virus

Hi, sorry for the delay. I have exams on Monday so may be a bit sporadic with responses.

I had success with everything, until the VundoFix part. The VundoFix scan found nothing, so I typed in the two dll files you list. After a few seconds I got an error message: "Cannot import C:\WINNT\VundoFix.reg: Error opening the file. There may be a disk or file system error". Then the PC restarts itself. I deleted VundoFix and reinstalled it, but I got the same error message three times. BTW, there is no "checkbox labeled Run VundoFix as a task" in the version of VUndoFix that I have (6.02.0006). Don't know if this is important.

I can see the dll file you mention in the HJT log. COuld I delete them from HJT?

Neal is away for the next few days. I can continue to assist you, if you wish.

As was done for the 'spooler service' but with slightly different steps, put the following service to a 'Start-up Type' of DISABLED or MANUAL to see if that helps to improve matters:

Microsoft Windows Man Service (Windows Man Service)

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

    Hi and thanks,

The problem is still there! This is what happened:

    - Deleted the files you list, using HJT. Rebooted.

    - Connected to the internet on startup. It connnected OK and the modem showed normal activity. I updated AVG, which I haven't been able to do for days (BTW I am posting here on the other computer in the house).

    - I opened IE - it went straight to a MS updates page, which looked normal. I tried to download the critical update, but the MS page told me I had to turn 'autodownload' onto Automatic, from Services.msc, which I did.

    - I then tried again to download the MS critical update, and couldn't. Looked at the modem and the lights were going crazy again. I disabled autodownload.

I noticed Userinit.exe in the HJT log. Is this a problem?

Do you think we should just re-format and get someone to re-install everything?

    Here is the latest log:

Download and install, and then run the following tool in SAFE MODE when requested:

    Clean out TEMPORARY FILES procedures:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

    CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

    Install Options:
    • Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
    • Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Do not run CCleaner until requested later.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe wintask32.exe
    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINNT\system32\userinit.exe,wintask32. exe

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WINDOWS MICROSOFT UPDATE] wintask32.exe
    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [WINDOWS MICROSOFT UPDATE] wintask32.exe

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
    CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

BOOT into SAFE MODE and delete the following file:

    C:\WINNT\system32\wintask32.exe

    Run CCleaner in SAFE MODE.
Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.
    • Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
    • Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
    • Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
    • Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Let me know if you use more than one user profile on this PC.

    Hi,
Sorry for the delay - exams finished!

Managed to do everything you suggested, but had trouble locating C:\WINNT\system32\wintask32.exe - evetually found it in hidden files. Some of the info below may relate to the fact that wintask32 was still on the PC at the time.

    - I installed Netveda Safetynet firewall before I connected to the net this time.
    - Net activity seemed normal. Netstat revealed normal stuff, tho I don't know what I'm looking for really. I certainly have normal net speed back, and didn't see heaps of foreign IP adresses in netstat. The lights on the modem were flashing a bit, as though there was something still running in the background, but nowhere near like before.
    - AVG adware scanner is crashing the PC. I haven't tried to reinstall it yet.
    - On connecting to the net (after I installed the firewall), viruses were almost immediately detected by AVG - they weren't there before. They were: joop[1].exe Trojan Horse BD; 81284_netapi[1].exe Trojan Horse BD; a trojan horse in bootini.exe. I don't understand how they are getting in. THe other PC in the house is running Windows 98, which everyone says is crap, and all the same free protection software, yet NEVER has a problem.
    - There is more than 1 user profile for this PC. I removed administrator access from the default user ID, and when I connect to the net I try not to be logged on as an administrator.

This HJT was done after I'd deleted Wintask32:

The HijackThis LOG is now clean. That takes care of the obvious.

Once you have a Trojan, they are able to call home to either update themselves or download other malware and to potentially interfere with anti-Trojan scan attempts. The addition of a 'software firewall' should now be in a position to monitor and challenge all incoming and outgoing traffic requests and the program(s) responsible.

Lets see if the same name items keep re-appearing or do the names change. It may be necessary to determine and then run a FULL PATH kill list (for all such recurring malware file items) outside of WINXP so that each attempt to delete a file (by your AV tool) cannot be reinstated by another running malware process.

Thanks again for your help - delighted to be able to access the net on that PC now. I will watch to see if the same probs recur, but consider the problem solved for now.

    Cheers,
    Velvet.
