    Unhappy help! high cpu usage

    hi,
i have noticed on task manager that most active programs are using up to 99% of my cpu. It doesn't seem to be specif to one program as i have noticed explorer, internet explorer, and aol all using large amounts of the cpu .which is slowing it down just a litle bit.

i have done as asked with adaware se, spybot and avg.

    system info if it helps:

emachines 370 1.80ghz intel celeron processor
    3Dagp intel extreme graphics card
    26mb ddr

running windows xp home ediion with sp2

I am guessing that you have 256MB of RAM memory. Most of that will be cycled through just loading XP and not much else. Any eventual memory deficiency will cause items already in memory to be swapped to disk to accommodate any current new requests for memory. As more and more applications become 'resident' in memory/disk, it takes very little for simple operations to require constant swapping in order to do the most basic of tasks. Each such swap of memory contents for disk contents will normally show initial CPU spikes as so noted. Only, if such spike events become lengthy and sustained do you have something to worry about.

BOTTOM LINE: You likely need more memory - probably at least an additional 512MB. In general, a PC with less than 1GB is potentially going to have the kind of performance issues as so noted. Neither is a celeron chip the most productive foundation for any highly demanding tasks - that is generally also a trade off, as well.
