To repeat from my OP, the main problem I am trying
to solve is the annoying "The Page Cannot Be Displayed"
messages on some of my IE6 pages. These are associated
with doubleclick. As I understand it, doubleclick tries to
fetch ads to put in these spaces; and some doubleclick
defenses operate by rerouting these calls back to your
own computer. But in my case, the calls go out to la-la
land somewhere, and the machine bogs down before
deciding to post that error message. That is actually
worse than the doubleclick ads, because the failed
fetches seem to take longer. As I mentioned, I had
hoped to fix this with a new hosts file; but it didn't work.

Download the Intermute stand-alone version of CWShredder from here: cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe
Install it and check for updates then exit, we will use it later.


We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:

• Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
• Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
• Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
• Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

Run hijackthis and click on scan button and put checks next to these:

Make sure nothing is open but hijackthis and click on fix checked.


Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.


Run CWShredder and click on fix.


After tool completes reboot normal mode and post a new hijackthis log. Thanks.

I followed the procedures in your new post; new HJT log is copied below.

Alas, previous round of procedures completely scrambled Compaq's
browser hotkeys. I will contact Compaq tech support and try to reset
them. "Page Cannot Be Displayed..." occurences now seem somewhat
worse, as at least one OTHER doubleclick-type ad linker is ALSO going
off to la-la land.

I hope the new HJT log helps. Might it be time to consider a brute force
approach such as updating entire browser to IE7?

Download the Intermute stand-alone version of CWShredder from here: cwshredder.net/bin/CWShredder.exe
Install it and check for updates then exit, we will use it later.


We must disable the Real-Time Protection feature of Windows Defender for it may interfere with the changes we need to make.

To disable Real-Time Protection:

• Go to "Tools" | "General Settings"
• Scroll down to "Real-time protection options"
• Uncheck "Turn on real-time protection (recommended)"
• Remember to reactivate this feature when we have finished all our work.

Make sure nothing is open but hijackthis and click on fix checked.


Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.


Run CWShredder and click on fix.


After tool completes reboot normal mode and post a new hijackthis log. Thanks.
