Windows XP -- Can't access Control Panel functions!

Hello! I Google’d my problem and found your fantastic site which has already helped me in recommending to use ewido Anti-Spyware and giving me instructions on how to properly configure my Ad-Aware program.

After I downloaded two video files from a site that I had no problems with before, I noticed that both came out as RAM documents rather than .mpg, .wmv, etc.—afterwards, I noticed that whenever I tried to access the desktop display properties (screensaver, etc.), I would get a Control Panel error saying “Another program is currently using this file.”

After researching your site, I followed the instructions given by one of your techs to a person with a related problem—I downloaded ewido as I’ve said and after running it, it found a Tracking Cookie (Medium Threat) and a Trojan.Small.js in a C:\WINDOWS\ executable file from a game application I had downloaded and deleted for not loading properly approx. 7 hours earlier—after quarantining both, I deleted them and saved a report.

This still didn’t help me, so I again followed instructions on this site and downloaded and ran HijackThis! and the resulting log is as follows:

I hope what I did next wasn't a mistake (or mistakes--famous last words), but I used HijackThis! to "fix" the following lines:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvMcTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup
    O23 - Service: ASP.NET State Service (aspnet_state) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\aspn et_state.exe (file missing)

I also used "Search" in XP to find any new or bogus RunDLL files and I found one that was named "Run DLL32" with no file extention, was in folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32", was 10 KB, type "File" and the main point, I found in the Properties was created at the same time I downloaded the game.

I did all this upon recommendations from this site and others of its type--I don't know if the changes I made in HijackThis! is undoable, but I have saved the RunDLL32 file in my Norton Recycle Bin.

I also am having a problem with Windows screens locking up, but when I CTRL+ALT+DELETE and bring up and exit out of the Task Manager, everything works again without me having to end a process.

I was having an issue with Norton AntiVirus blocking an attempt to change my home page to a different Web address--this was after I again followed instructions to delete my Temporary Internet files and cookies and Reset Web Settings..., but somehow that issue has resolved itself or due to my newbie tinkering! :^D

The only other thing I can think of to tell you is that I ran both Norton Anti-Virus and Ad-Aware (under my old settings) and neither found a problem, in particular that Trojan!

I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide!

    Paul

Update: I was messing around in msconfig/Startup and I got stuck in Safe Mode--I tried everything and finally got fed up and turned the power strip completely off--when the PC booted back up, everything was normal, but when ewido started up it found a trojan--I don't know if it was same one but I don't think so as the source file was WINDOWS/System32--I have not gone to any site or downloaded any file to get this trojan, so I assume it's stuck in my HD and respawning itself? I promise not to futz around with my settings anymore and wait for help! :^D

Another update: I restarted PC just to ensure it would come up in Normal Mode and it did but Norton Anti-Virus came up with two file error messages--one for "rundll32.exe" and the other for "h323log.txt"--they both prompted me to go to Symantec web site, which I did and after running some sort of special scan, informed me that I had a 3rd-party firewall installed and running on my PC--?!...

Welcome I suggest you refrain from fixing items in hijackthis until asked to do so.

Create a folder such as C:\HJT or C:\Program Files\HJT and move HJT.exe into the newly created folder so we can have avaiable backups in case you fix the wrong thing or I make a mistake. Very important.

You have a password stealing trojan on your machine and you are strongly advised if you do online credit card transactions or online banking to notify those companies immediately of the situation or anything else that has sensitive data.

You should change all passwords after we are done and not do anyhting sensitive until you are clean.

Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.

Run Ewido again from safe mode and post the log it makes please and hopefully Ewido will nail that trojan.

Reboot normal mode and post the ewido log and a new hijackthis log.

    Also...

    Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

    Click the "Save list..." Button.

Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

    Thank you for responding!

I went ahead and opened a case with Symantec as I was aggravated that their Norton tools didn’t catch this—the analyst accessed my PC and deleted any files that had Trojan in the name—he also ran free/shareware tools such as SmitRem, SmitFraud Fix, VundoFix and roguescan.fix. He then claimed the issue was resolved and told me to reboot my PC. I did and I got back into Normal mode, but still couldn’t access any Control Panel functions and my screens still kept locking up. I then later ran a Norton SpeedDisk and afterwards, I couldn’t access any of my destop icons—I restarted my PC and now I am back to being stuck in Safe mode.

At your direction, I have done the following:

I created a folder called HJT in C: Program Files. I got stuck back into Safe mode and I ran ewido and h/w the results:

I placed the items in Quarantine and then deleted them all, which proved to me this is respawning—again, I notice the mysterious RunDLL file in System32.

I also ran HijackThis in Safe mode as I don’t know if I can reboot back into Normal mode—h/w the results:

If i was you I would be prepared for the worst case scenario.

    Can you do this:

    Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

    Click the "Save list..." Button.

Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

    1. Download this file - combofix.exe
    2. Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    3. When finished, it will produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

    Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall

    And this...

Download Silent runners.Vbs post the log it creates please
http://www.silentrunners.org/sr_scriptuse.html click yes to the suplimentry searchs
Wait until there is a All Done message !!, Then open and post the log next to it.
Your antivirus script protection might interfear or alert, please allow it to run after a bit box will say done.

    And this...

    BlackLight

Please download F-Secure Blacklight (blbeta.exe) and save to your C:\ drive.
    1. Open a command window by going to Start > Run and typing: cmd
    2. Copy/paste or type the following in the command window:

    C:\blbeta.exe /expert

    3. Hit "Enter" to start the program and then close the cmd box.
    4. Accept the user agreement and click "Next".
    5 Click "Scan".
    6. After the scan is complete, click "Next", then "Exit". BlackLight will create a log in C:\ drive named "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" (the xxxxxxx will be the date and time of the scan).
    7. The log will have a list of all items found. Do not choose to rename any yet! I want to see the log first because legitimate items can also be present...like "wbemtest.exe".
    8. Exit Blacklight and post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Note: If you download Blacklight to your desktop, just double-click to run from there and it will create the "fsbl-xxxxxxx.log" on your desktop.

For the first time since my problem(s) began, I was able to boot “From Last Known Good Configuration” last weekend. Once up, I discovered that my RunDll.exe file was gone from system32 folder and I don’t believe Symantec took it out as I saw it when they were “finished” taking out the Trojan Sunday. The suspicious RunDLL file with no extensions and that only says type of file is File and starts out around 8 KB and grows was still in there, so I took it out.

Now when I try to access Control Panel functions, I get new error message telling me it can’t find rundll32.exe in the system32 folder.

I ran ewido and found only 6 tracking cookies this time and no Trojan. I ran Ad-Aware and found 13.

Sorry for not checking in, I have been sick, going to school AND training for new job.

The status is still about the same…

I still cannot get into Control Panel functions except for Network Connections. When I try, now I get a “Windows cannot find ‘C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe’ error message. I cheded the System32 folder and sure enough, the Rundll32.exe is still gone and I know I didn’t delete it (the small one is still there but is normal looking as I put it in there from my Windows XP boot disc). My screens sometimes lock up, especially if I bring up more than 2 at a time. My Internet Explorer is slow to come up and respond and once, yesterday, I had Windows warning message letting me know that my browser was about to change and if I wanted it to go ahead or go with IE?

When I run ewido now, I don’t get Trojan, but I do get at least 3 medium cookies everytime, even if I only go to msn.com, hotmail.com and my university homepage. Ad-Aware catches around 15-20 under same conditions, even after running ewido.

As for your directions, the results are below…

    Everything shows clean,

Post a new hijackthis log please.

Before you deleted that file did you right click and select properties to see if it was a legit windows file?

The one that I deleted was named "Run DLL32" and the Properties showed no file extention, was in folder "C:\WINDOWS\system32", was 10 KB, type "File" (unknown file) and the main point, I also found in the Properties was created at the same time I downloaded the game--when I checked the Revisions tab, it was full of recent dates like it was reloading itself.

The rundll32.exe file I did not delete, but at some point in all this troubleshooting, it's icon changed from a normal .exe one to a blue circle with a yellow X in it and then it disappeared on it's own.

Like I said, I replaced the 1st rundll32 file with one from my Windows XP source disk to see if that would help as I don't know how or where to find a replacement rundll32.exe file.

The new hijackthis log is below.

Does it look like I will have to reformat my HD and reload XP? I don't have a problem with that but I want to know if that would fix the problem for sure and if there is instructions on how to do that on this site...

Again, thanks for the help so far!

    Hi,

Run hijackthis and click on scan button and put checks next to this:

    O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

    O16 - DPF: {0B72CCA4-5F11-11D0-9CB5-0000C0EC9FDB} (Street Technologies ActiveX Control Object) - file://D:\Content\Streams\RC1_Quicken\static\streetnoagen t7.cab

Nothing open but hijackthis and click on fix checked.

    Try running this:

    Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.
Please print these instructions as you will be going into safe mode.
Reboot your computer into Safe Mode by following the following steps:

    Reboot.
When the machine first starts again it will generally list some equipment that is installed in your machine, amount of memory, hard drives installed etc. At this point you should gently tap the F8 key repeatedly until you are presented with a Windows XP Advanced Options menu.
Select the option for Safe Mode using the arrow keys.
Then press enter on your keyboard to boot into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt
