Can anyone tell me how to get rid of the C: Drive directory listing appearing every time I start my computer? I don't knw how it got set up to come up each time, but I would like to unset it. Thanks for any suggestions.
I tried to do a system restore to June 26th, when I first started having this problem--after I upgraded to AOL 9.0 Security version. I have chatted with the technicians at aol to no avail. They don't know what caused it. The restorations did not work--the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 thing still appears, even though it didn't begin appearing until after the dates I pick for restoration. Are there any options for getting rid of it? Does it indicate a larger problem? Thanks
Now, another thing, when I tried the restores, this message came up.
This application has failed to start because xprts.dll was not found Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
Okay, after a recommendation from Jephree,I searched for the unknown file xprts.dl- no results. Also, went to Kelly's Corner- tried the 260 boot and got this message : "The script cannot repair your issue The expected Registry value was not found." Here's another part of the issue: every day almost, I have to do a Quick Restore on aol because the access from my computer will not work. I click on the desktop icon and I try to select from the Programs menu with no results. I end up talking to the technical support and they always say turn the computer off and restart or do quick restore. Sometimes I have to do both. Often the restarting of the computer is enough. What's the deal with that?
The next recommendation from Jephree was to go to get a HijackThis log read:
I went to the site and installed AVG7.1.371 but did not install the Spyware Protection or Software Firewall, as I already have them with aol.9.0 Security version. I tried to do the following with HijackThis, but cannot figure out the zip and unzipped information. The following instructions were given- but there was no option to click scan and save a log file as told below:
Click scan and save a log file and notepad will open up with HJT inside.
Copy/Paste into your reply. Thanks.
So that is where I am. I ran the virus scan and there were no viruses detected.
Try cleaning out your TEMP FOLDERS:
Clean out TEMPORARY FILES:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:
CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp
Install Options:
- Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
- Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.
Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.
- Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
- Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
- Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
- Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.
Run the READ FIRST Procedures found here, including those for HijackThis:
http://www.d-a-l.com/help/showthread.php?t=32403
Does the C Drive still come up? Does it just list the C Drive at the root or ONLY a particular FOLDER?
Hi, I did the C cleaner installation and running. I still have the C Directory showing up when the computer is turned on. No change. Do you think that Jephree is able to follow this thread since I moved to a different category? I posted all the things I had done thus far. Another problem is that when I try to turn off the computer, I get "this program is not resonding" and the box that says" wait until..." I used to be able to click "turn off" and it would shut down. Whatever the problem is- is affecting that too.
Another thing is- would the HijackThis log be helpful to you? I don't know how to get it, if it is. Thanks

Follow the 'Read FIRST Procedures" which were given in my last post and you should be able to easily post a HijackThis LOG. Could prove very revealing in isolating some of your issues.Another thing is- would the HijackThis log be helpful to you? I don't know how to get it, if it is.
I often see Jephree in this part of the forum. It is very common for us to follow our posters issues where ever that might occur. We are all able to learn something new as a result.

I hope this helps. Thanks for your time. I did a search to find the file on my computer. Now, I have a bunch of things with that title. Should I have so many? Thanks again and have a great day.
I am not sure which file your are referring to. Some files such as svchost.exe are legitimately repeated as several instances in support of various running processes.I did a search to find the file on my computer. Now, I have a bunch of things with that title. Should I have so many?
NOTE: Running a BETA such as IE7 can present complicating issues that can cause confusion as to what your real issues are.
Read over the following directions. Ask if anything appears unclear to you.
Download Clean.bat to your desktop: for later use to clean out your TEMPORARY and PREFETCH files.
http://www.thatcomputerguy.us/downloads/clean.bat
We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.
