    Hijack This Log

    Hi there,

Lately I've experienced a tremendous slowdown in boot time and operation of my computer. Ive run adaware, spybot, avg, defragged and a number of other things, but the problem has not gone away. I also think something is conflicting with my soundcard, but I'm not sure.

I use rainlendar, windowsblinds, xfire and AVG. The other virus detection services heree (trendmicro and symantec's stuff) I dont have installed or use. I dont use things like yahoo messenger, windows messenger, itunes, napster, realbar or some of the other stuff. If it's extraneous, I don't have a problem removing it if it'll improve performance.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Read over the following directions. Ask if anything appears unclear to you.

Download Clean.bat to your desktop: for later use to clean out your TEMPORARY and PREFETCH files.
    http://www.thatcomputerguy.us/downloads/clean.bat

We will be restarting into Safe Mode later on in the fix and you might not be able to access the Internet. Accordingly, it is probably a good idea to print out the following directions or copy them to a text file on your desktop using NOTEPAD. Read these instructions carefully and feel free to ask if you're unsure about anything.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [YAHOO INSTANT MESSENGAR] YahooMsgr.exe

    O16 - DPF: {1C78AB3F-A857-482E-80C0-3A1E5238A565} - file://C:\install.cab
    O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} - http://207.188.7.150/24355ca447cd22...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
    CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.

HIDDEN FILES: To make sure you can see all hidden files, please follow the directions here

SAFEMODE: Boot into safe mode by tapping the F8 key at restart and choosing 'safe mode' menu option (explained here if needed).

Delete TEMPORARY FILES: Now, hunt down the most common temporary file locations and the temporary file clutter contained therein (and of possible malware hiding places):

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
    Check the boxes for:
    • Temporary Internet Files
    • Downloaded Program Files
    • Recycle Bin
    • Temporary Files
    Click OK or Enter

For additional, more thorough cleaning and for multi-profile user configurations:
(*) Run Clean.bat to clean up your TEMPorary files.

***** Clean out the Recycle Bin for items removed below, ONLY once you have regained the full functional use of your PC.

Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):

    DELETE FILES:

    YahooMsgr.exe

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Thank you for your prompt response. I checked off those things on Hijack This! but was unable to do anything once in safe mode. When i booted into safe mode it gave me two options: my regular account and administrator. I didn't know the admin password so I went into my account. There, I got a warning message I couldn't read with a post beep from my computer. Only icons loaded and I was unable to read anything or see what I was doing so I was unable to navigate through the rest of the steps.

Anyway, here is the revised logfile:

Which of those can I safely remove?

  4. #4
VopThis is offline Senior Member (Canada)
Try to DELETE the following FILE in NORMAL MODE:

    YahooMsgr.exe

There is no overwelming significant advantage to deleting any additional items until you are satisified that you current issues have been fixed.

Do you really want 'startnow.com' as your start page?

Should consider removing the following HijackThis line items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://minisearch.startnow.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://minisearch.startnow.com
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =

Also, you can generally remove most 'O16 items' to good advantage but you might want to keep:

    O16 - DPF: {04E214E5-63AF-4236-83C6-A7ADCBF9BD02} (HouseCall Control) - http://housecall60.trendmicro.com/housecall/xscan60.cab

if you plan on still using Housecall. If you do end up needing such an item it will simply be made available again, as necessary.

Post a revised HJT LOG and tell us how your PC is doing.

Well, I searched for YahooMsgr.exe and nothing came up so I guess it was eliminated. I selected the items you outlined as well as all the 016 items and this is my new HJT log.

I know there is a natural attraction to fix lines with apparent missing files or components. Some of these items are not likely actually missing - it is just that HJT cannot see or find them. Besides, they are probably not of much consequence in resources use, either.

Also, a 'Broken Internet access' is not normally fixed by deleting the affected line item (could actually make things worse) - might also be preventing the removal of the 'R0' entries:

    DownLoad http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Launch the LSP application, and click the "I know what I'm doing" checkbox.

    Move nothing just click Finish.

If still no joy, download and run WinsockXPFix:
http://members.shaw.ca/techcd/WinsockXPFix.exe - Winsock repair utility designed for Windows XP.

You can (retry and) remove the following optional lines in HJT:

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch =
    O2 - BHO: REALBAR - {4E7BD74F-2B8D-469E-C0FF-FD60B590A87D} - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\Real\Toolbar\realbar.dll

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

I did the LSP fix and that removed it from HJT's detection so I guess it worked. Unfortunately R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,SearchAssistant =
R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Search,CustomizeSearch = are still there. My main problem is the tremendous slowdown in boot time. After the bios boot screen, the sataraid screen, the video card screen and the device screen, I counted a full 40 seconds on the windows xp loading screen. Needless to say this is dramatically more than what it used to be. Could updating my bios help at all? My ASUS board is running Phoenix Award Bios at the moment and, to be honest, I have never updated the BIOS. I do have AsusUpdate on my computer, could running that help me? What complications could arise?

Thankfully we have gotten what shows up on my HJT log to a much more acceptable level. However, we still have those blasted CustomizeSearch and SearchAssistant at the top. What effect could they be having on my computer? How malicious are they? Again, thanks for your continued support.

My main problem is the tremendous slowdown in boot time.
The remaining two (2) entries (R0) would not be the cause of this. They are more clutter than anything else and may be more indicative of something else in the way.

Updating a BIOS does have some risks associated with it. If not done correctly or if problems arise (freezing), it is possible to fry your BIOS. I would only do that if that is absolutely your last option (especially if your problem has arisen only all of a sudden). Furthermore, a BIOS update would not normally be a magic cure procedure, anyway. What other changes have happened recently to your PC? I gather that this has only been a recent dramatic issue?

Let us try a few more procedures, here:

    Clean out TEMPORARY FILES:
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:

    CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/downloadbuilds.asp

    Install Options:
    • Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!
    • Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.

It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.

Select the ‘Cleaner’ BUTTON option (top LEFT), if not already selected. Use the ’Windows’ TAB up front by default.
    • Uncheck ‘Cookies’ option (advisable)
    • Optionally, Uncheck ‘Recently Typed URLs’ option (potentially still useful)
    • Click the ‘Analyse’ button.
    • Thereafter, click ‘Run Cleaner’ after you have reviewed what it proposes to clean.

Download and install Ewido anti-spyware 4.0 (uninstall any previous version first).
    • Click the Download BUTTON. On the next page click the Download now BUTTON.
    • Save and then install (Run) from the save location.
    • Open/Run ewido anti-spyware
    • Wait a few moments and Ewido should Auto update itself (note date of last update). If it doesn't update, click the update ICON at top of screen:

    • Click on the Update now LINK at the top of the window
      • Click on the Start update button
      • Wait for the update to download and install
  9. This is very important to get the LATEST updates
  10. Click on the Status ICON
    • Under "Your computers Security"
Click change status on Resident shield to inactive (ONLY consider activation of that feature once you are clean)
  11. Click on the Scanner ICON at the top of the window
  12. Click on the Settings tab then select Recommended Actions and choose Quarantine
  13. When updating has finished. Close Ewido.

  14. We will be using this tool in a later step.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode.
    • If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power.
    • Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
    • Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
    • Ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
    • Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
    • Login on your usual account.
    ______________________________

Close ALL open Windows / Programs / Folders. Please start Ewido, and run a full scan:
    • Click on the default Status ICON and select the Scan now LINK.

      OR

    • Click on the Scanner ICON . Select the Scan TAB.

      • Select Complete System Scan. Ewido will now begin to scan your system.

    • If Ewido finds anything it will list them in the Preview WINDOW:
      • Make sure that Set all elements to: shows Quarantine, if not click on the link and choose Quarantine from the popup menu.
      • Select Apply all actions at the bottom of the window (and the items found will be quarantined – and recoverable, if any items are needed back).

    • When the scan has completed, click on the Save Scan Report button and save the scan to your Desktop where it can be easily found.
    • Copy and paste the EWIDO scan results into your next post.
    • Close Ewido and REBOOT.

Wow, thanks so much. Those two files did a wonderful job.

CCleaner cleared 6 gigs of files from my computer.
    Ewido quarantined 100 files.

Unfortunately, I don't think I generated a report from my ewido scan because in safe mode, everything was black and I couldn't read anything so I guess I missed the FIx and Save a Log button.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
What is the state of your PC now - any improvements - did the R0 entries go away?
