    Re: major spyware problem

How did you make out with the Norton HELP link?

Here is what still remains from Norton/Symantec (and those components are likely still active). Adding a new (and NECESSARY) antivirus tool may not go well with this still in the way.

You MAY need to find the install disks and reinstall so that you can PROPERLY UNINSTALL. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THESE ITEMS IN HIJACKTHIS - this could make matters worse:

    O2 - BHO: Norton Internet Security 2006 - {9ECB9560-04F9-4bbc-943D-298DDF1699E1} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll
    O3 - Toolbar: Norton Internet Security 2006 - {0B53EAC3-8D69-4b9e-9B19-A37C9A5676A7} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\AdBlocking\NISShExt.dll

    O23 - Service: Symantec Internet Security Password Validation (ccISPwdSvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\ccPwdSvc.exe
    O23 - Service: COM Host (comHost) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Norton Internet Security\comHost.exe
    O23 - Service: Norton Protection Center Service (NSCService) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\Security Console\NSCSRVCE.EXE
    O23 - Service: Symantec Network Drivers Service (SNDSrvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SNDSrvc.exe
    O23 - Service: Symantec SPBBCSvc (SPBBCSvc) - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\SPBBC\SPBBCSvc.exe
    O23 - Service: Symantec Core LC - Symantec Corporation - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe

It is easy to see how optimal gaming without an active antivirus tool is not a good idea (as per Norton quarantine area).

Good news I found the disk and was able to uninstall norton. Also The pool curity thing or whatever that was is now off my computer and since the last time I have posted my popups have gone down to almost non existant.

As it stands right now I have no protection on my machine except for this ewido 14 day trial. If you see anything in hte HJT that needs to go let me know.

Also now that I need a good less memory intensive antivirus program, what do you you suggest as being the best. I am more than willing to pay for a monthly or yearly one if it means the better one is not free. I am looking for something for the long term. The one thing my friend told me was good was something called AVG by grisoft. He says it is good because it is not commerical therefore the hackers have less incentive to hack it. He says that since norton is so big that hackers are all over it trying to break in. I do not know though I am a computer noob.

EDIT: Also an antivirus program that comes with a firewall and antispyware is probally what I am looking at as well.

Here is a new hijack this log for you to verify.

EWIDO is an anti-spyware tool that looks for things mostly very different from an ANTIVIRUS tool. Spyware and viruses are very different infections - but there is some minor overlap such as for some trojans. The only thing you lose after 14 days is the real-time features for EWIDO - the on-demand scanner will continue to work.

Lets get an antivirus tool on your PC. There are some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.
    AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1
    Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

I don't personally recommend them. For example, the AVG site can be a bugger to get updates for (sometimes very busy) and I have found the auto-update feature has been quite flakey on many installations (what can you expect when it is free). The only thing worse than no antivirus tool is one that has out-of-date virus definitions.

Suggest your try NOD32 - you should hardly notice it is there (good solid definition auto-updating process):

    http://www.eset.com/download/index.php

    Free 30-day Trial
    NOD32 for Windows NT/2000/2003/XP/32-bit/64-bit
    http://u4.eset.com/eval/win/v2/nentenst.exe

Run a complete scan using NOD32.

Post a new HJT LOG if NOD32 removes anything. Thereafter, we can look at any remaining malware issues.

I have the nod32 but I am having a little trouble understanding it all. There are a lot of options and settings I did a scan and it made a log but I somehow cant save it. Although it is tough to understand everything I do like the product from first looks. Here is a new HJT thread:

For now, be sure and have the Windows firewall on, at least (Control Panel>Firewall).

User Preferences for an antivirus tool, etc. - which requirements truly matter for you?

Do you really want to look at a bloated 'security suite'?

Initially, the NOD32 user interface is a bit of a turnoff. Bottom line, load it and just let it run - you shouldn't have much need to interact with it. I haven't spent much time on configuration issues - have left it mostly as is on client PCs (almost no complaints).

Looking for the Right Antivirus, Part IV
    http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/82.htm#aviv

Even though Nod32 operates very reliably, with very little system overhead — an admirable trait — I can't pick a product that disses non-Microsoft email apps. It's just who I am.
Looking for the Right Antivirus, Part III
    http://www.scotsnewsletter.com/81.htm#aviii

So, to set the record straight, it is possible to make Nod32 2.5 operate completely silently. A piece of spectacularly bad UI in a configuration dialog kept me from finding the settings that I was looking for. Those settings are on the setup dialog for IMON (Internet Monitor), on the Miscellaneous tab, behind the Scanner Setup tab, on the Actions tab where there are default actions you can select via radio buttons for what to do when a threat is found, including "Prompt for an action," "Delete," and "Clean." My mistake was in not noticing that there were multiple file-types that you had to set with these radio button actions: Files, Archives, Self-extracting archives, Run-time packers, and Email. In order to select each file type, you have to select the drop-down then, click the radio button action, then select the next drop down, and so on. Sound confusing? I bet you didn't follow that. Heck, I didn't follow that. Like I said, very bad UI.

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

    R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [EUCI] "C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\explorer.exe" -vt yazr

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
    CLICK 'FIX CHECKED' with HijackThis.

    1) Please download the Killbox.
Unzip it to the desktop and run it.

    2) Select "Delete on Reboot".
    3) Then Click the "All Files" button.

    4) Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:

    C:\WINDOWS\DOBE~1\explorer.exe
    5) Return to Killbox, go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard".

    6) Click the red-and-white "Delete File" button. Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "Yes" to reboot next.

POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review:
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.

Just one quick question. Should I be using the Hijack this in safe mode when I go to delete these files?

NO - SAFE MODE not needed when using KILLBOX (because it deletes upon REBOOT). Since KILLBOX is very powerful, don't use unless absolutely necessary.

NOTE: The following line should also be added to the HijackThis fix list:
    O20 - AppInit_DLLs: repairs303169590.dll c:\windows\system32\arpa.dll taskmgr.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.dll

Locate the complete PATH for the following FILE and add it to the KILLBOX list:

    repairs303169590.dll

When I did my hijack this scan I got an error that has to due with the last one you told me to do it. Here is the error message:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modBackup_MakeBackup(sltem=020 - Applnit_DLLs: repairs303169590.dll c:\windows\system32\arpa.dll taskmgr.dll C:\WINDOWS\system32\taskmgr.dll) Error #5 Invalid procedure call or argument

I have not done the killbox thing because I am not sure if I should go ahead after seeing this error.

HijackThis is about to remove a BHO and the corresponding file from your system.

EDIT: Also i have this shortcut on my desktop that is a link and I cant find the source of it. Here is what it is called:

It is related to purityscan (outerinfo) for which we ran a prior fix - may need to check that out again and reapply that fix, if needed - certainly delete that link:

Please post your latest Hijackthis LOG.
