well the estimated was as high as 65 hours at some point. when i went to sleep it had run for over 6 hours and the estimate was down under 20 so i thought maybe it would finish sometime today. unfortunately the computer went idle overnight and i had to log back into the account in the morning. of course the program was gone so i really dont know if it found anything or finished running for that matter. after work today i am going to stop some startup applications and empty system restore and then try running the kaspersky scan. if there is a problem with my plan let me know.

Don't do a systemrestore flush on an infected machine.

well you arnt going to be so happy with me. i did flush the system restore figuring that it would significantly shorten the length of a scan. then i scanned with kaspersky. it took overnight and i just lost the results page opening the link to this page. anyway it said no malware detected all files were clean but i messed up and lost the text file. sorry about that. here is my newest hjt log. if you need me to run bitdefender or kaspersky again let me know. i changed the settings so that the computer will no longer go into sleep mode or whatever it did the other night to interupt the bitdefender scan.

Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.
Navigate to these files or folders using Windows Explorer (OR Start -> Search) and delete (if present):

Reboot and tell me how your computer is running now please.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.
Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.
Click the "Save list..." Button.
Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.
To clean your temp folder, recycle bin, etc..please download this free tool:
CCleaner
Don't install any Toolbars, or other programs, should it ask you!Just uncheck the option of installing the Yahoo toolbar.
It will put a shortcut on your Desktop.
Click on CCleaner to start it. Then click "Run Cleaner", just use the windows tab up front by default.
Then Reboot (Exit)

Well now we are just kind of shooting in the dark here with no infections showing anywhere.
You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.
Please download AproposFix from here:
http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe
Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.
Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.
Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.
When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.
Please download MicroWorld scanner for the link below. Make sure that you choose all files and directories. I warn that the scan will tak a long time and will not fix anything. Once the scan is completed in the LOWER box hilight all the files there then copy (ctrl +c) and paste it into the thread please.

thanks. i will go ahead and do those things. is it possible that service pack 2 wasnt installed correctly from windows update because of the infections that were on the system at the time? my friend said he tried to update windows when he realized there was a problem but never downloaded any updates before that. also in the hjt log there are a couple of mcafee mentions but there are no mcafee programs on the computer that i know of. is there some sort of antivirus conflict? i really dont know that much about this stuff so im just throwing some questions out there. i figure at some point if nothing else works i can reinstall windows. i have all the files he needs backed up but i guess that he would lose software if i did that...like office for example am i correct in thinking that?
