    Strange Problem... HELP!!

    Hello,

I am experiencing a strange problem on my computer where the bytes I am sending is a greater number than the bytes I am receiving. Right now, bytes sent are at 19,692,849 while bytes received are at 1,108,193. Is this sort of thing normal? Could this be some sort of virus or am I worrying for nothing?

I just ran Spybot and the AVG scan and found no viruses but Adaware did show something called an MRU list in the scan summary. When I clicked on it, it said that it did not pose a threat. Should I get rid of it or leave it alone? Here is my hijackthis log. Any advice would be greatly appreciated at this point. Thanks in advance!

You appear to be running two (2) real-time antivirus tools are the same time (AVG and Norton). They will likely interfere with each other and cause problems. Please uninstall or disable one of them.

Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free (trial) version of Ewido TROJAN scanner
[Developed for Windows 2000 and XP]:
    1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
    2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
    3. From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
    4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run, so time to go get a drink and a snack....
    5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
    6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread.
Note: Ewido is a free trial product for 14 days. Since Ewido is a trial version, the realtime guard and automatic update will stop functioning after 14 days. We are not installing the guard because it might interfere with the cleanup or the malware removal process. You can use Ewido as an on-demand scanner (recommended) but you will have to manually update the definition file each time you scan. If you decide to purchase Ewido, you can enable the 'Realtime Protect' and 'Automatic Update' functions by clicking on the 'Status' bar (Top left) and clicking on both items under "Your Security Status".

    REBOOT.

Consider using a free firewall if you are not already using one (use only one firewall at a time – normally you will need to disable the MS firewall). Some good free ones (for incoming and added outgoing traffic protection) are:
    Kerio Personal Firewall: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm
*** After 30 days, Kerio shuts down selected features, but will continue to run in 'free' mode.
    Zone Alarm: http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/comparison.jsp?lid=ho_za

It is not a bad idea to also consider using a Router/Hardware firewall device where you have a High-Speed Internet access connection. A software firewall may occasionally need to be disabled or it gets/remains disabled by someone or something. Such an added layer of security consistency has a lot of merit to it.

VopThis, thank you for all of your help. I already have a firewall that I'm running (Norton) and I uninstalled AVG as you recommended. Here is the scan report from Ewido..... I THINK I installed it correctly.

The volume of outgoing traffic is indeed strange. Suggest you carefully review the permissions allowed in your firewall for anything that may have snuck through.

In addition, the following BETA tool may be very revealing:

Download 'SocketShield' and double-click the 'XPL' icon in the toolbar tasktray to observe all current applications using the internet and their traffic statistics:

    http://www.explabs.net/ss/index.html

Furthermore, you could run the following additional scans:

Please do an online scan (scan only tool) with Kaspersky WebScanner

    [Internet Explorer required]
Go to Kaspersky website: www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner and click on the Kaspersky Online Scanner BUTTON/BOX.

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
        - Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
        - Scan Archives
        - Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

You might also want to run this scan as an added check:

    [Internet Explorer required]
Place a shortcut to Panda ActiveScan on your desktop (FREE Version is mostly a scan only tool) .

    Run the Panda ActiveScan shortcut.
    - Once you are on the Panda site click the Scan your PC button
    - A new window will open...click the Check Now button
    - Enter your Country
    - Enter your State/Province
    - Enter your e-mail address and click send
    - Select either Home User or Company
    - Click the big Scan Now button
    - If it wants to install an ActiveX component allow it
    - It will start downloading the files it requires for the scan (Note: It may take a couple of minutes)
    - When download is complete, click on Local Disks to start the scan
    - When the scan completes, if anything malicious is detected, click the See Report button, then Save Report and save it to a convenient location.

Post a Panda log back here, if anything is reported.

I downloaded and ran Socketshield and it looks like the majority of the bytes are being sent by ccProxy.exe. It's weird cause when you click on the expand button, there are anywhere from 2 to 15 of the TCP things running at any time and they're sending out huge numbers of bytes. I'm pretty sure this is due to the new Norton 2006 anti-virus I just installed. A friend of mine who is an IT guy said it was most likely NAV since I had no threats when I scanned my system.

BTW, I have now ran the following scans and none of them showed anything:

    Spybot
    Adaware
    Norton AV
    CWShredder
    Ewido
Kaspersky (I ran this before your last post and found nothing)
I also d/l and ran the CCleaner as well

My question now is... is this sort of thing normal for the new Norton AV cause I don't think my 2004 Norton did this. If not, is there any way to prevent it from sending out such huge amounts of data? Damn, maybe I shouldn't have gotten the new version after all.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
.... ccProxy.exe. It's weird cause when you click on the expand button, there are anywhere from 2 to 15 of the TCP things running at any time and they're sending out huge numbers of bytes. I'm pretty sure this is due to the new Norton 2006 anti-virus I just installed.

ccProxy.exe is not unique to any version of Norton.
ccproxy.exe is a part of the Symantec Internet Security Suite. This process allows you to setup basic Internet sharing, which allows you to share your Internet connection across your home or office. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.
    Google Searches:
    ccProxy.exe norton (154,000 hits)
    ccProxy.exe "norton 2006" (77 hits)

Potentially, ccProxy.exe may have been compromised or tapped into or is sharing access with other PCs on the network. You may have to consider completely uninstalling Norton and reinstalling or disabling Internet sharing if there is no reasonable (internal) explanation for the traffic.

Otherwise, you could attempt to determine where all that traffic is being sent to:

Try using 'IPWHOIS Lookup' here (for non-internal addresses 192.x.x.x):
