    Please Help!!

I'm new at this-just registered today. I am desperate to get rid of a never-ending popping up spyware thingy! ( At least I think it is spyware.) It is a round red ball in my task bar with an X through it & it pops up every 15-30 seconds saying my computer is infected. I can't get rid of it. I have ran Avast virus protection & Spy bot to no avail. I found your web site through a search engine & hope you can help me. I'm not real familiar with computers so please explain solution so a dummy can understand! LOL Thank you for any help you can give.

I think I did everything you said to do right. The next day after I posted this thread, my pc wouldn't turn on so I took it to shop & just got it back. They evidently got rid of the red ball thingy so I may be alright for now as far as spyware is concerned. I am pasting the info from HJT though just in case. Thank you so very much for taking the time to help me. I already had AVAST but not the AD-AWARE but I downloaded it today.

You should do some minor housekeeping on several HijackThis items:

You are not running HijackThis (HJT) from a desired location. You really need to setup a dedicated folder for HJT items – to avoid horrible clutter and/or potential lost backup issues.

It's best that the HijackThis tool NOT be located in its current location (particularly on your Desktop or in a TEMP folder). This way you can more easily undo any changes if something goes wrong.
    • Create a new folder in your C: Drive.
    • Name the FOLDER HijackThis (or HJT) such as C:\Program Files\HijackThis or C:\HJT and move the HijackThis.exe file into it.
    • Run HJT from there (and revise your shortcut accordingly).

SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust...search/ie.html
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cust.../www.yahoo.com

Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
    CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.
