    Major problem!

I get home and my sister was using the computer and then she complains to me that the mouse was freezing so she turns it off and then later on when I go use it I get the following message:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corupt
    :\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the
origional Setup CD-ROM. Select "r" at the first screen to start repair.

Nothing opens. Please tell me that this can be fixed. I tried reinstalling Windows, but it didnt work. I can get into the safe mode menu but once I check safe mode or last known good configuration it goes directly to the message. Should I just send it to get fixed by a professional or is it hopeless.

Hi, well it doesn't sound to good but will have a go and see what we can do for you.

Try burning to CD from a different computer if you have to.

    First Step:

You may want to print out these instructions for reference, since you will have to restart your computer during the fix.

    Please download AproposFix from here:
    http://swandog46.geekstogo.com/aproposfix.exe

Save it to your desktop but do NOT run it yet.

Then please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
    1) Restart your computer
    2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
    3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
    4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click aproposfix.exe and unzip it to the desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and run RunThis.bat. Follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode, and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

    Second Step:

Go to the link below and scroll down and find the link for hijackthis and install and post a hijackthis log and Aproposfix log. Thanks.

I copied AproposFix to a floppy from another computer but it is no use. As soon as I turn on the computer the screen starts off as it normally would with the Dell logo and the loading bar and after that the black screen with the message appears. Going through safe mode is of no use either, I press the SAFE MODE option and then enter, once the next screen comes out i click the operating system and that goes to the next screen where it starts with another list of things (not sure what this is called) and then it stops at

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS\system 32\config\system.log and then the dreadful message appears again.

I'm not sure if all this info is of much use to you but I don't want to leave something out that could be helpful in resolving this pain of a problem.

    signed why me again!

If I was you I would take it to a local shop. From the research I've done on that it needs to be worked on with somebody looking at the computer.

    Good luck.

DAL moderator Jephree is helping me on that on the Internet Explorer help forum. Could someone check my HJT log, maybe there is something that I can clean up to help me fix my internet connection problem and of course other problems I dont know about.

    Hi,

    Log is clean.

Might try this if nothing else works:

    1.) Download WinSockFix. (by: Option^Explicit)
2.) UnZip WinsockFix.zip (Pay close attention to where the file is extracted to.)
    3.) Run WinsockFix.exe.
    4.) Click the Fix button.

    Good luck.
