Again, thank you so so much. I hope eventually I can restore Microsoft Works - I didn't realize how much I used and depended on it. And hopefully I will soon be able to restore my entire system!
My best to you-

From add/remove program uninstall "viewpoint media player"
Here is what you got on your computer protecting you and actually you can have to much and it will cause conflicts.
Adaware SE
Avast
Ewido
Bug Doctor
SpyBot
SpywareBlaster
Spyware Guard
Trendmicro Anti-spy
Windows Defender
You may be getting conflicts on these:
Bug Doctor
Trendmicro Anti-spy
Windows Defender
If it was me I would uninstall two of those, but that is just me.
Here is what I have on my computer:
Adaware SE
Avast
SpyBot
SpywareBlaster
SpywareGuard
SunBelt/Kerio Firewall
Hosts File
You really need a host file.
Read about it here:
http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm
How is your computer running now?
Yes, Neal, from what I read, the 'Hosts" file is exactly what the doctor ordered. That is what I keep fussing about. I want to prevent the "bad guys" from even getting a foot in the door! How do I get it(a hosts file)? I didn't see what to do on the webpage.
HOWEVER, (Isn't there always a 'however'?) I was running a couple of utilities and by golly there's a freakin' TROJAN among us! The Win32 worm/trojan was supposedly detected - I aborted the connection, but I have a feeling it's still lurking nearby. I googled it and tried to find a clear solution but to no avail!
By the way, I did uninstall Viewpoint (I just this weekend got rid of AOL- Yippee!) and I also uninstalled Trend Micro and Windows Defender. BUT, I paid $60 (yes, I know I am a dummy!) for the Bug Doctor so I guess I'm stuck with it - I've tried to get my money back but they don't respond - just another costly lesson I had to learn. From now on, unless a tech or expert tells me (& explains like ya'll do) to download something, other than clip art, forget it! I'm done!
Listen, I seem to be getting hit a lot all of a sudden - why do you think that is? Other than brief research, the only sites I really spend any significant time on is bravenet.com and gamerival.com ( oh, and d-a-l.com and yahoo)![]()
I've read that IE is the most susceptible browser and that there is a hole in it where Trojans get through. If "they" know it's there, and how it got there, why can't it be fixed? Netscape is okay (on a 1 to 10, it would get a 6 or 7 from me.) I have Opera too but it is virtually featureless! Give it a 3! Then there's the ever-popular (waste of space) Mozilla/Firefox - it was solely and undoubtedly responsible for passing GoZilla to me! And it didn't impress me anyway! Say what you want about IE - it's tried and true! What's a newbie to do!?

Hi, nothing is fool proof on computers. I work on computers daily that use other browsers other then IE. All browsers get infected if they visit the wrong site. I use FireFox and consider it a lot better than IE. Never used Opera.
To view the HOSTS file in plain text form. (441 kb) (opens in IE)
Note: The text version also makes a terrific reference for determining possible culprit sites
Download: hosts.zip [right-click - Select: Save Target As] [Updated 05-10-06]
This download includes a simple batch file (mvps.bat) that will rename the existing HOSTS file (HOSTS.MVP) then copy the included HOSTS file to the proper location. For more information please see the readme.txt included in the download.
Download Information: (checksum info is on the HOSTS file not the "hosts.zip")
MD5: 528ae9e784b4aeccca879f7905956f5a SHA-1: a409954111d8ace23cef40a322dba29b390aa8bc
(created by File Checksum Integrity Verifier) To view Checksum for this download Not here - over there > [click here]
Manual Method - Unzip in a "temp" folder and place in the appropriate installed location:
* If you are having trouble downloading or extracting the HOSTS file [click here]
Note: the below locations are for the default paths, edit as needed.
Windows XP = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC
Info to install a Host file is in the quote box and if you will sign up for e-mail notification they will send you an e-mail when it has been updated. I do and just got one for updateing.
