I guess I should mention what's happening also. In MSN explorer and IE , I cannot get active X controls and scripting to work. (pcpitstop and windows update said that scripting wasn't enabled) Applications seem to hang without going much further than showing a screen with the title and min, max, close buttons , nothing in the body. Thx

    Welcome to DAL,

Well let's see, how many anti-virus programs do you have running? 3? You only need one and any more than that can and will cause significant problems sooner or later. I suggest you uninstall all but your favorite one.

Download Clean.bat to your desktop(Save page as or Save as): for later use to clean out your TEMPORARY and PREFETCH files.
    http://www.thatcomputerguy.us/downloads/clean.bat

Run hijackthis and click on scan button and put checks next to these:

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...rch/search.html
    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...://my.yahoo.com
    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\SearchURL,(Default) = http://red.clientapps.yahoo.com/cus...//www.yahoo.com
    R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Local Page =

    O2 - BHO: (no name) - {F1FF080D-12A3-439A-A2EF-4BA95A3148E8} - (no file)

    O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {BA52B914-B692-46c4-B683-905236F6F655} - (no file)

Make sure nothing is open but hijackthis and click on fix checked.

Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.

Now run that clean batch file you created earlier, type in 'Y' a couple of times and press enter each time you type in "Y" until black box disappears.

    Then:

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
    Check the boxes for:
    Temporary Internet Files
    Downloaded Program Files
    Recycle Bin
    Temporary Files
    Click OK or Enter

    Reboot

Make sure you are set to normal startup. Click Start -> Run -> Type Msconfig -> Press Enter -> make sure Startup is set to Normal Start

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
[*]When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
[*]When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
[*]From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
[*]After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
[*]Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
[*]If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
[*]When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

Post the log Ewido makes back here please and a new hijackthis log. Thanks.

3 anti-virus, I tried to uninstall norton, I guess I'll try again. I'll do all that you suggested and be back. Should I get rid of systemworks all together. I don't seem to use it?

    Hi,

Norton is a real drag to uninstall sometimes but I have some links from Norton on how to uninstall it.

    What version do you have?

Also did the ewido but i screwed up by not saving at the end. I'll try again after work. Ah, and there's mcAfee hidden there. I don't see it in my add/remove programs though. Any ideas, thanks

    Hi,

    Go HERE to uninstall Norton.

That Mcafee thing your seeing is an activex from possibly doing an online scan there at sometime.

    You also have PestPatrol.

Run hijackthis and click on scan button and put checks next to these:

    O16 - DPF: {4ED9DDF0-7479-4BBE-9335-5A1EDB1D8A21} - http://download.mcafee.com/molbin/s...84/mcinsctl.cab

Nothing open but hijackthis and click on fix checked.

Since you have the Giant spyware program you might want to consider up gradeing to Windows Defender. Microsoft bought out Giant quite awhile ago.

Please post the Ewido log when you can. Thanks.

How's your computer running after Ewido?

    Hi,

I did everything and even fixed the current hijackthis. I still have app./programs that don't finish loading? It's like it starts and hangs before the body can finish loading. On the search( with the pooch) the dog shows up but the text above it ( What do you want to search for ) with the options never does. I did the ewidos scan and out of 400k items checked, it says that it found over 250k item infected, all mozilla in the entries and then "doubleclick" and all those that i thought I had seen spybot checking for. Oops, it looked like alot of them were in norton protected recycle bin, well , I have uninstalled that but it keeps showing 250k entries infected. Thanks!!

Please post the Ewido log as an attachment if it is two large to post in this thread or use two or more posts to post it.

    Also...

    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner

You will be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.

    * The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    * Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    * Now click on Scan Settings
    * In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
o Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    - Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    o Scan Options:
    - Scan Archives
    - Scan Mail Bases

    * Click OK
*Now under select a target to scan:
    o Select My Computer
    * This program will start and scan your system.
    * The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    * Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
o Now click on the Save as Text button:
    * Save the file to your desktop.
    * Copy and paste that information in your next post.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Thanks Neal for all your help. I think I fixed it. I downloaded Windows script 5.6 for windows xp/2000 and after installing tried my system restore. The window popped up and it actually worked as advertised. So far so good. It seems that some people are having this same problem. Anyway, thanks again. I will post the ewido in several sections because I would like to get rid of those.
