Recently encountered a problem with IE and Firefox browsers not displaying my default homepage of "Google.com". In fact I can't surf the web unless I go in to each browser and reset the default options and LAN settings. I'm simply connected via ethernet to a Comcast cable modem. Never in 2 years with this PC or service have I had this happen. I have run and updated Ad-Aware, Spybot, Spyware Blaster, AVG, and Zone Alarm per D-A-L forum recommendations. Right click on the file you downloaded and select install. This resets the trusted and restricted zones to defaults.

Note: if you have immunized with Spybot this takes those off. You will have to re-immunize with Spybot. If you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE/Spyads, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both of those afford. For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE/Spyads, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

Reboot.

Run hijackthis and click on scan button and put checks next to these:

Nothing open but hijackthis and click on fix checked


Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.


Now run that clean batch file you created earlier, type in 'Y' a couple of times and press enter each time you type in "Y" until black box disappears.

Then:


Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
Check the boxes for:
Temporary Internet Files
Downloaded Program Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Click OK or Enter

Reboot

Make sure you are set to normal startup. Click Start -> Run -> Type Msconfig -> Press Enter -> make sure Startup is set to Normal Start

Please download, install, and update the NEW free version of Ewido trojan scanner:
[*]When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
[*]When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
[*]From the main ewido screen, click on update in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
[*]After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful")
[*]Click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on Complete System Scan. This scan can take quite a while to run.
[*]If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. We have been finding some cases of false positives with the new version of Ewido, so we need to step through the fixes one-by-one. If Ewido finds something that you KNOW is legitimate (for example, parts of AVG Antivirus, pcAnywhere and the game "Risk" have been flagged), select "none" as the action. DO NOT check "Perform action with all infections". If you are unsure of an entry, select "none" for the time being. I'll see that in the log you will post later and let you know if ewido needs to be run again.
[*]When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Make sure you know where to find this file again.

You appear to have two anti-virus programs running, which will cause problems, I suggest that you uninstall one of them.

Thanks for all of your help. So far things appear to be back to normal. I was wondering what to do about Norton since I had been using it for years. I had the entire suite of Norton SystemWorks 2003. I started using AVG about 2 years ago with this PC and never saw the need to spend all the money on Norton each year. Unfortunately they don't have a handy uninstall anywhere in the program menu. I had disabled this in Windows utilizing the "Services" menu so it wasn't running. I have disabled it from starting up with Windows. Any advice on a complete removal as Add/Remove programs doesn't seem to allow this option?? I can only "change" Norton in the Add/Remove list. Is this because I disabled it in the services dialog??

Yep Norton is a bear to uninstall and it is a resource hog and cost money and isn't that good actually. I never reccomend it to any one.


You will probably need to go ahead and enable all Norton products before uninstallation.

Thank you so much for all of the help. I was actually able to completely uninstall Norton thru Windows (Symantec preferred method for obvious reasons). Didn't really want to do any registry key deletes. I should have done this over a year ago once I had AVG running. I knew this was probably not cool having to anti-virus programs installed. Once my subscription ran out with Norton I installed AVG and haven't looked back.
Anyway, things are working just fine with both browsers and now that Norton is buh-bye I feel much better. Your rock!
