Hello, hope somebody can help! I am having problems with my computer my operating system is Windows XP with SP2, my default browser is Mozilla Firefox but I also use IE for windows updates. It started to go really slow on start up, which I think was after I tried to load some of my sons old games (windows95/98 versions) to see if I could get them to work, but I couldn't. I uninstalled them and that was when I started to notice the slow down on start up. I tried to fix this myself (unfortunately I don't know an awful lot about computers! ). I cleaned up the computer by uninstalling programs I no longer used, cleared temp files and cookies etc. I also did a disk defrag. I then started to have problems with my internet connection, more often than not it came up 'unable to find server' but would trace it after a few retries.

I then got a message when starting the computer 'Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt - System32\Drivers\Ntfs.sys - repair starting windows set up using original CD Select r.

After a couple of reboots it started, once in to Windows it would get so far then a message came up about not being able to find a file relating to ZoneAlarm, I had to turn zone alarm off and then uninstall it, I turned on Windows Firewall to use before I could download Zone Alarm again.

I then got further problems with pop up windows, mainly Media.Fastclick and my connection to the internet being very unstable, I would get the message 'Link to Wanadoo failed - reconnect pending' or unable to load the page as the connection was reset.

I re downloaded Zone Alarm and turned off Windows Firewall I scanned my computer with Ad-Aware SE, Spybot search and Destroy, ewido anti-malware and AVG. This seems to have cleared the pop ups and Media Fastclick but I was still left with the unstable internet connection. I tried to resolve it be resetting up my internet connection with Wanadoo but to no avail.

I have used Hijackthis and will post the report, I am hoping it is something straight forward but at the moment it is doing my nut in

I am seeing no issues in your HijackThis log.

Trying to load old games can overwrite certain system files with older versions and thereby create consequent potentially serious incompatibility issues. It seems clear that your problems only really began when you tried to load those older games.


Please go to the forum section for your operation system - they will likely have more direct experience with how resolvable such issues are or whether reinstalling your OS on top of itself might help.


Mention this thread and provide a link to it to show we have looked at any complicating malware/badware issues.
