    Spyware-Quake... but maybe not?(RESOLVED)

Hey DAL team - how are you guys?

I believe I was infected by Spyware Quake, or something with really similar problems. I have the same desktop icons and issues as the guy in this post, except that I never saw the registry scan at startup.

Before I found this website, I did my own cleanup - disabling add-ons in I.E., deleting links, checking for unfamiliar processes (wasn't familar enough to rule everything out, unfotunately). I got it to the point where IE didn't auto-start to the hackers' website claiming to 'fix my problems' if I paid them for their 'spyware removal tools' (rolls eyes), but I knew I still had a serious problem when IE wouldn't let me save a home page - it would hang forever when I tried to set one, and it would return to about:blank every time. SpyBot, Windows Defender, and AdAware all found nothing on my computer, as did AVG.

At this point, I found the post linked to above by doing a Google search on the websites these mysterious desktop icons linked to... I went through the process advised there, and am posting here as a follow-up to see what's left. (At least one of the programs reported a few things left on the system... happily, however, the symptom that prompted my search to begin with (the IE home page problem) has been fixed). (also - you will notice in the smitfiles.txt report that I left two of the bad links on my computer for reference purposes when I was cleaning through everything by hand before I found your site)

Any help would be appreciated greatly... I am posting all the info you asked FreakY for (again, in the post I linked to above) after he finished his cleanup. I hope it's clean, but this is my work computer and I cannot take any chances.

    Regards,

    ~j

    Welcome to DAL,

Create a folder such as C:\HJT or C:\Program Files\HJT and move HJT.exe into the newly created folder so we can have avaiable backups in case you fix the wrong thing or I make a mistake. Very important.

Your log doesn't look to bad at all, a question, are you familiar with this below:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowLOMControl]

Your Java is out of date and there is a worm going around now that exploits your version real easy, so I suggest you get Java updated now.

    Updating Java:

    * Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
    * Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )
It should have next icon next to it: IPB Image
    Select it and click Remove.
    * Then Download and install the newest version from here:
    http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

    Open Hijackthis.

Click the "Open the Misc Tools" section Button.

Click the "Open Uninstall Manager" Button.

    Click the "Save list..." Button.

Save it to your desktop. Copy and paste the contents into your reply.

So you are saying you still have icons on your desktop?

HJT folder - created. I noticed this in a different thread, and got it moved... that makes sense; backups are happy. ^_^

    Java - updated. Thank you.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ShowLOMControl] - actually, I am not familiar at all with this entry.

Icons: no. I had left 2 icons in my start menu when I was deleting all the others, so that I would have a reference to what was going wrong on my system. (I couldn't find a record in AVG of the virus name it was fighting, and so these URL files were the last link I had at that point besides remembered symptoms, and a disabled add-on in IE). There are no more bad icons anywhere that I've run into.

Interesting... I clicked the 'fix checked' button, and got this message in a dialog box:

    "Unexpected error occurred!
"Error #52 (Bad file name or number) in Sub GetLongPath(.exe).

"Please send a report to merijn@spywareinfo.com, mentioning what you were doing, and what version of Windows you have.

"This message has been copied to your clipboard."

After clicking 'okay', the offending item in the list had vanished.

I wouldn't worry about that error as long as that thing is gone.

How is your computer behaving now?

Please post hopefully one more hijackthis log. Thanks.

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
Thanks for stopping by and happy surfing.

If you are no longer having any more trouble here is some preventative measures for you.

Here are some preventive measures you can take to keep your computer from getting infected again. also keep all these and Ad-awareSE and SpybotS&D updated.

    http://forums.thatcomputerguy.us/ind...showtopic=1190

Flush your restore points in ME and XP, by turning System Restore off and then back on.
This will create a fresh restore point.

    Explained here:
    Windows XP: service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgen...src=sec_doc_nam

    Microsoft ME:

    http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT...rc=sec_doc_nam

    RegProtect

This small registry protection tool will save you hours of heartache by notifying you when some program good or bad is trying to access your registry.

You have the option of allowing(good) items or blocking(bad)items.

    http://www.diamondcs.com.au/index.php?page=regprot

To reduce the re-infection potential for malware and protect yourself against spyware, here are a few helpful suggestions:

    1. Keep Windows and Internet Explorer current with the latest critical security updates from Microsoft. This will patch many of the security holes through which attackers can gain access to your computer. You CANNOT complete this update using an alternate browser.
    http://v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.co....aspx?ln=en-us

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.asp

    2. Run your antivirus software regularly, and to keep its definitions up-to-date. If you are thinking about switching, there are a some good free Antivirus programs that are decent, including AVG and Avast!.
    AVG: http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

    Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

    3. In addtion to using Ad-aware consider using another free malware scanning/removal program:
    MS Antispyware beta: http://www.microsoft.com/athome/secu...e/default.mspx

    4. Consider using a free firewall if you are not already using one. Some good free ones are:
    Kerio
    http://www.sunbelt-software.com/Kerio.cfm

    OutPost Personal Firewall:
    Outpost

    5. Consider using an alternate free browser for general web surfing but you must use IE for windows update.
    Mozilla Firefox: www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/

    6. Consider increasing your browser security by using these programs:
SpywareGuard will protect your homepage from being hijacked: http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareguard.html
SpywareBlaster will increase browser protection by blocking Thousands of known malware sites by adding them to IE's restricted sites zone. Download it here:

    http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

If you use SpywareBlaster, you can also use a customblocklist to add even more entries into IE restricted sites zone. Go to this site for the current list and how to use instructions: http://customblockinglist.cjb.net/

IE-SPYAD is similar in that it adds thousands more known malware sites to IE's restricted zone. Download it here:
    https://netfiles.uiuc.edu/ehowes/www/resource.htm

*Remember just like your primary anti-virus software, it is important to keep all of these programs up-to-date and use them on a regular basis. It's Free
