    Thanks for the help Neal,

Looks like I have come upon a tight spot at step number one:

My view options are set to "show hidden files", and my C:\Windows\System32 is GONE!
I frequently go to this folder to access custom icons, so I'm familiar with it to some degree.
I ran a search on the folder itself, and a search for Winlog.exe and got zero hits.

I have heard of a "deep" hidden file problem, where the command prompt was needed to change attribs in order to reveal a folder. Wondering what you will advise.

[edit] On a hunch, I entered the path in the address bar, and sure enough, I found the system32 folder. I did not find winlog.exe. I did find winlogon.exe
I wonder if you may have ... no,,, you must be correct in the file name, right?
    [/edit]

[update from jotti scan- assuming you would want the winlogon.exe, rather than winlog.exe...]

Results of jotti virus scan of winlogon.exe:

    File: winlogon.exe
    Status:
MIGHT BE INFECTED/MALWARE (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found, this is suspicious. Normally programs aren't packed and don't force the sandbox into lengthy emulation. Do realize no scanner issued any warning, the file can very well be harmless. Caution is advised, however.) (Note: this file has been scanned before. Therefore, this file's scan results will not be stored in the database)
    MD5 01c3346c241652f43aed8e2149881bfe

[end of update jotti scan for winlogon.exe]

RE: Bitdefender, and Kaspersky sites-- I tried them in Internet Explorer- set security to Medium - experienced freezes with both. Activex patches failed to complete.

    Hi,

Let's go in a different direction for now, after further research I found what that file is it is the Alcan worm and a toughie but let's try this it has worked before.

Download Clean.bat to your desktop(Save page as or Save as): for later use to clean out your TEMPORARY and PREFETCH files.
    http://www.thatcomputerguy.us/downloads/clean.bat

    Please download Brute Force Uninstaller.
Unzip it to it’s own folder (c:\BFU)

RIGHT-CLICK HERE and choose "Save As" (in IE it's "Save Target As") in order to download Alcra Remover. Save it in the folder you made earlier (c:\BFU).

Open My Computer and navigate to the c:\BFU folder. Start the Brute Force Uninstaller by doubleclicking BFU.exe

In the scriptline to execute field copy and paste c:\bfu\p2pnetwork.bfu
Press execute and let it do it’s job.

Wait for the complete script execution box to pop up and press OK.
Press exit to terminate the BFU program.
Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check the following:

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [outlook] C:\Program Files\outlook\outlook.exe /auto
    O4 - HKLM\..\RunServices: [winlog] winlog.exe

Close all open windows and click Fix Checked.

Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.

Now run that clean batch file you created earlier, type in 'Y' a couple of times and press enter each time you type in "Y".

    Then:

Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
    Check the boxes for:
    Temporary Internet Files
    Downloaded Program Files
    Recycle Bin
    Temporary Files
    Click OK or Enter

    Reboot

Make sure you are set to normal startup. Click Start -> Run -> Type Msconfig -> Press Enter -> make sure Startup is set to Normal Start

Post a new HJT log for further review

    Thanks for the continuing help...

I followed your guide and completed steps until I got to the part about rebooting to Safe Mode. Can't be done on my machine.
    On restart- My options are:
[ESC]- Boot Menu (no options for safe mode here)
Boot menu shows options for Hard drive group and/or CD ROM group
[F1] - Setup - this is the BIOS console. No option for starting in Safe Mode.
    [F-10] - System Restore - I don't wanna go there

After escaping from Boot Meny or Setup, there is a flash of black screen with what appears to be a highlighted line showing option to start in C: drive
Another line, too fast gone to read, but I think it's a reference to the D: partition, containing the Restore date for this system.

More text is below this, but in less than a second, all is gone, and Windows starts.

(BTW- I don't think I've ever heard the Windows welcome tune, although the "goodbye" tune plays when shutting down)

So- during the process of several restarts, I've tried pressing F8 mulitiple times, with zero response.

??? Are you SURE that F8 will start this Compaq Presario 1610NX in safe mode ???

Save 20% on AVG Internet Security 2012 Suite!
    Let's try this:

    Please download SilentRunners from here:
    http://www.silentrunners.org/Silent%20Runners.zip
Unzip it to the desktop and double-click on it. If you get any kind of warning message about scripts, please choose to allow the script to run. When the scan is finished, a message will pop up and a logfile will have been created on the desktop. Please post the entire contents of this logfile for me to see.

    Download http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/winpfind.php

Extract WinPFind.zip to your c:\ folder.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode

Then open c:\WinPFind and double-click on WinPFind.exe. When the program is open, click on the Start Scan button to scart scanning your computer. Be patient as this scan may take a while. When it is done, it will show a log and tell you the scan is completed. Reboot your computer back to normal mode and and post the contents of c:\WinPFind\WinPFind.txt as a reply to this topic.

    * Download finditnt2000xp.zip.
    www.thatcomputerguy.us/downloads/finditnt2000xp.zip

    * Unzip the contents of finditnt2000xp.zip to a convenient location.
    * Navigate to the Find It NT-2K-XP folder and double-click on find.bat.
    * A command prompt will open and it will search your computer for malicious files.
    * Once it has finished a Notepad window will pop up with output.txt.
    * Copy the entire contents of output.txt into your next post.

    Thanks
