Spyware / Virus has me stumped
Hi all - some little smarty sent me something yesterday which has me stumped.
Whatever it is, won't allow me to run msconfig, av software, firewall or pretty well anything else which could help me determine what it wrong in any mode other than safemode.
Each time I've scanned in safe mode, clean up, boot up, back to square 1.
I have scanned 3 times with AVG, I've tried the cleaner trojan scanner, cws shredder picked up 1, Spybot S&D as well as webroot's spysweeper. I've checked my Hijackthis report.... usually I'm the one who picks up on the problems for everyone else but this one has me stumped... I'm sure it's something I'm just too tired to see now and would really appreciate some help.
I'm running Windows XP Home on an Off the shelf HP - no modifications on this machine other than being on a home LAN. I don't have Sp2 installed - when I bought the machine, I found it was one of the models that HP advised against updating at the time and I haven't had the time to check since to see if that status has changed.
Hijackthis currently also shuts down before I can run the scan - however I managed to get a log earlier in safe mode.... won't even let me open the notepad document, not even in word - shuts down the software! Will go back to safe mode and report back with log in 5

a rescan with spybot (yet another scan) has again brought up FakeMSN8Beta and Redirected Hosts - it's basically shoving all websites which are related to AV and spyware sofware to 127.0.0.1 (Home)
-
RUN the following procedures in SAFE MODE, if necessary:
Get hoster here:
http://www.funkytoad.com/download/hoster.zip
Unzip it to a convenient place and open the program.
Choose "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK".
Close the program.
SELECT HijackThis FIX ITEMS: Scan with HijackThis and place a check next to these items:

(if you did not set that up yourself or know why it is there)
Make sure that all browser windows and internet links are closed, even this one!
CLICK ’FIX CHECKED’ with HijackThis.
POST A REVISED HIJACKTHIS LOG for review (in NORMAL mode, if possible):
Reboot and post a new HijackThis log with any feedback as appropriate - how things are now behaving: any new or remaining apparent issues.
-
Thanks Vincent - will give it a shot and get back to you shortly.
-
ok, new log. Sorry - couldn't get HJT to run in normal mode. Can't get much to run in normal mode - doin this via safe with netwoking. the 192.168.0.254 entry I am pretty sure will be my router as I'm on a home network links to ADSL.
On reboot, I found that something was attempting to delete the value which made ZoneAlarm start. I've tried edwido as well since my first post this morning - picked up a selection of stuff including istbar, and another trojan ... this is not like my system to pick up all this crap, but it hasn't been checked since my boss was on it last week so who knows....

192.168.0.254 is often associated with a DMZ - Demilitarized Zone setup which essentually creates a very lax router security configuration that is more easily hackable. What router and model are you using, and do you have access to the router configuration screen?
Can you try running SpySweeper (SS) in SAFE Mode and then TEMPORARILY turn off 'Load at Windows Startup' option (Options icon). Using the 'Home' icon please determine the program version that you are running (current version is 4.5.9 (Build 709). Many scanning tools will not work properly while SS or any realtime tool is running.
See if NORMAL MODE now appears to work better.
Pull the pull on the Internet and exit/disable ZoneAlarm temporarily, if necessary. Tell us what has worked.
-
Th router I have is a Billion - BIPAC 5100 is the only model type detail I can find on it.
I confess, I had a friend set it up for me so I have no idea how to access the config screen, but I do remember seeing him use it.
The version of Spysweeper I have is a couple of versions old so downloading the new one now and will respond with details soon.
-
It's found these items, but the new versoin of spysweeper didn't have a trial option, without a valid subscription, I can't repair them. Will hunt solutions to them individually. Don't know why netnanny is on there either... never installed that.
Trojan Horse found: csrss spamrelayer
System Monitor found: netnanny chat monitor
Adware found: whenu save
Adware found: systemprocess
Adware found: navexcel navhelper
Spy Cookie found: atwola cookie
I think the Trojan is my main problem, will work on finding a solution to it...
