Are you sure thats SpywareGuard or SpywareBlaster?

SpywareBlaster doesn't detect it, it protects against it, so just click Enable All at the bottom of the start page. So if its showing a massive list, this is the things it immunizes against.

I checked most of your ActiveX's in your log and there aren't any baddies, just leave them alone. If an antispyware program flags one, then by all means remove it.

My queries and your replies are bouncing all over the place! LOL My bad, most probably: speaking of which, I was referring to Spyware Blaster, sorry for the confusion. And I should have known that there was already a sticky on that subject posted on the boards. My bad again. So, Active X do not pose a threat. That's good.

But I have another unrelated 'problem' which I tried to explain in a different thread, as per Bear's instructions. I am reposting my explanation here, in the hope that you will be able to help, as usual.



Hi Owen. As per Bear's instructions, I am submitting this problem to you since you seem to be the resident expert in the matter. My system is basically functionning correctly except when it comes to downloading pics (PHP format, as far as I could tell) and games (Java Script). There's a 20 to 30 seconds delay before the pics and/or games come on. During that time, the 'hand icon' appears on my screen and moves along when I operate the mouse but it is useless since the functions on the site appear to be frozen. In addition, contrary to usual, the MSN logo in the upper right hand corner stays still while the pic/game software is being downloaded. I've run AdAware and Spyware Doctor a few hours ago. Everything seems ok. No malware detected. Perhaps you could look into my latest log and tell me if things are ok.

P.S.: Should I be worried about this new 'addition' (**which I didn't download**) called AIM Toolbar?? It has asked me two or three times if I wanted to download the 'newer' version and everytime, I declined. I then had another message saying that it would remind me of the existence of the version at a later date. The thing I don't remember is if I clicked on the NO button or on the 'x' at the top right hand corner of that box. I was engaged in a game a couple days ago and suddenly I had this pop up from aim come on and tell me that they couldn't find my info request, which I hadn't made in the first place. I clicked on the 'x', the box disappeared and nothing else happened. But it got me to wondering...

By the way: the little AIM Toolbar is already active. There's a site I use to go to to check on some stock quotes. I now have the usual pop ups (strangely enough, there's NEVER a problem with those!) plus the message: 'Could not load White List. Mutex is stuck' (I look at the bottom of my screen and, coincidence of coincidences, I notice that this message is brought to me by who else but AIM Toolbar). For the time being, it's an annoyance (one MORE annoyance)... I've never had so many adwares and spywares since the past several weeks: it's a friggin invasion. And that is AFTER I scan my whole system using several softwares: a bit frustrating, on the whole.

Don't ever go thinking that Active X do not pose a threat. Its perhaps the reason that Internet Explorer is so easily to exploit. What I was reffering to was the fact that Spyware Blaster immunizes and doesn't scan. Your ActiveX is clean at the moment, but it may not be in future. Thats what SpywareBlaster protects against.

You should be worried if you didn't download it. Just uninstall it via Add/Remove programs and see how it goes. Have you recently installed AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) this may have been bundled with it. Personally I don't like anything from AOL.

Many thanks for your help, once again. And, again, I didn't go with the obvious (i.e. deleting it using the Add/Remove programs function). I *did* notice that the AIM toolbar was in the list, although it didn't physically appear anywhere on my screen! And, in answer to your question, I've had AIM for years on my system. Recently, AOL asked if I wanted to download a newer version of AIM, which I did. There weren't any problems then. A little later, I had the pop up saying that AIM had a new toolbar, and again I was asked if I wanted to download. That time, I declined. I believe I clicked on the NO button then, and the second time I was asked the same question I clicked on the "X" at the top right hand of the box. Shortly after that, the problems I tried to describe arose. I believe this was no coincidence.

But for now, the system seems to be working properly thanks to your wise advice.

MSN are bundling there toolbar with MSN Messenger now as well and the option is turned on by default. I don't personally use AIM, but I'm guessing its the same.

Preventing it returning

After your problem has been resolved on the forum, it is an absoulute MUST to do the following steps to prevent the problem returning. Click on the link to get access to the software or webpage that I'm referring to.

1. Visit Windows Update
Pay a visit to Windows Update and scan for and download ALL Critical Updates and Service Packs. New updates are usually released monthly so check back to Windows Update every month.

2. Download Antivirus Software-
If you haven't already got Antivirus software, you should download and install AVG Antivirus. It is freeware and is updated nearly every 2 days (sometimes more frequently if there are a lot of new viruses) and in my opinion, is better than some Antivirus software such as Norton. Antivirus software will prevent viruses infecting your system and it is important that you update it every two days or every week at the most.

3. Download a Firewall-
If you haven't already got a firewall, it is Very important that you download one. Firewalls will prevent unauthorised access to your computer and stop data leaking out of your computer. You may think that it won't happen to you, but Hackers don't care who you are, what you do, where you live or what you had for tea last Sunday on your holiday in the Lake District, they want your data. Firewalls will keep these sneaks out and one of the best is Sygate Personal Firewall, which happens to be freeware.

4. Spyware Scanners-
It is important that as well as having real time spyware protection, you have a spyware scanning application. If you have not already been told to download one earlier in this thread, it is a good idea to download Spybot Search And Destroy and Ad-aware. They are both spyware scanners and will search for a remove spyware. It is recommended that you have both, because one will pick up entries that the other misses. It is even a good idea to download these if you have other programs such as ASE, Spysweeper, Pest Patrol, etc, because one spyware scanner will not pick up everything. Please remember to update your spyware scanners weekly/fortnightly.

5. Prevent Spyware slipping through Internet Explorer-
Quite a lot of spyware slips through Internet Explorer if your settings are not tight enough. Spyware Blaster will help you prevent spyware slipping through and installing tracking cookies. Simply run it via Start> Programs> Spyware Blaster and click Enable All Protection and it will protect you. It doesn't even have to be open! Remember to update weekly/fortnightly.

6. Constant Spyware Protection-
It is important to have constant spyware protection. Spyware Guard works like an antivirus program but detects Spyware instead. It will constantly protect your system. Check for updates monthly.

All Of these steps are very important and it is HIGHLY recommended that you download all of the programs mentioned for your own safety. Remember to Update everything (including Windows using Windows Update)! It is also a good idea to perform weekly/fortnightly scans with Spybot S&D, Ad-aware and your antivirus software.

And last of all, please remember, that common sense is your greatest tool. Without it, spyware and other related Malware would rule!
