CPU at 100% (P2P ARES = 90%+), M/Soft AntiSpyware Beta 2, SPYBOT, ANTIVIR and AVG show all clear. I don't know if I'm using too much or too little security! (also have sygate, spywareguard, spyware blaster, winpatrol, peerguardian and those plastic dust covers on monitor and keyboard!

There is such a thing as having to much protection to the point that the programs slow down your machine conflict with each other and give false positives.

If you are running two anti-virus programs you really need to pick your favorite one and uninstall the other.

Make sure you can see hidden files/folders
In Windows XP
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
After you're cleaned, please "rehide" them again.


You have the Nail infection, so let's procede and see if we can kill that bug.


Please download the trial version of Ewido Security Suite here:

Install it, and update the definitions to the newest files. Do NOT run a scan yet.

Please download Nailfix from here:

Unzip it to the desktop but please do NOT run it yet.

Next, please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode.

Once in Safe Mode, please double-click on Nailfix.bat. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly --- this is normal.

Then please run Ewido, and run a full scan. Post the log from the scan here for me.

Then please run HijackThis, click Scan, and check:

Close all open windows except for HijackThis and click Fix Checked.

Restart your computer in normal mode and please post a new HijackThis log, as well as the log from the Ewido scan.

These programs can hinder HJT fixes so disable temporarily please.

Open Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Click on Tools, Settings.
In the left pane, click on Real-time Protection.
Under Startup Options uncheck Enable the Microsoft AntiSpyware Security Agents on startup (recommended).
Under Real-time spyware threat protection uncheck Enable real-time spyware threat protection (recommended).
After you uncheck these, click on the Save button and close Microsoft AntiSpyware.
Right click on the Microsoft AntiSpyware icon on the taskbar and select Shutdown Microsoft AntiSpyware.
After all of the fixes are complete it is very important that you enable Real-time Protection again.


Disable SpywareGuard by right clicking the icon down by the clock and select "exit".


Go into add/remove program and remove:(IF FOUND)

Web3000
Ares

Make sure you can see hidden files/folders
In Windows XP
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.
After you're cleaned, please "rehide" them again.

Scan with HJT again and put a check next to these items, making sure all browser windows are closed includeing this one so print this or create a new text document on desktop by right clicking an open area select new text document and save it to what ever you like. Now put a check next to these:

Now reboot into safe mode by tapping your F8 key upon restart and safe mode screen appears, select safe mode and press enter.

Now go into PROGRAM FILES and delete these folder(s):

C:\Program Files\Ares < folder


Now navigate to these file(s) thru WINDOWS EXPLORER and delete them please:

ShowWnd.exe < file
C:\WINDOWS\hh.ico

Open C:\Windows\Prefetch\ Delete ALL files in this folder.


Go to Start > Run and type: CLEANMGR.EXE and hit enter.
When prompted select the C: drive and click ok.
Check the boxes for:
Temporary Internet Files
Downloaded Program Files
Recycle Bin
Temporary Files
Click OK or Enter

Make sure you are set to normal startup. Click Start -> Run -> Type Msconfig -> Press Enter -> make sure Startup is set to Normal Start

I couldn't navigate thru windows explorer - didn't know how to find ShowWnd.exe but it seems to have gone.

Real time protection in microsoft antispyware settings and spywareguard were back to original settings when I resumed normal mode and went back in to enable them - does this mean that they were not properly deactivated?

P.S. I'm using Mozilla Firefox now - had a problem with browser today - couldn't get on to anything so installed Mozilla just to see if it would work and I think I'll stick with it as it gets a lot of good publicity on D-A-L re. security and speed - speed is amazing and I know it wasn't anything like this when I previously used it prior to receiving your help with my PC.
