Hi, you helped me a couple months ago with my computer, and things are still running perfectly, so thanks again. But, I'm here because my father is having some kind of problem with his machine. He's not computer savvy at all, and from what I can gather over the phone, his machine is a mess. I told him how to start in safe mode, because it will not boot normally. Even in safe mode, he is very limited. He can not browse folders without getting an explorer error. He was able to boot up using his windows cd, but could still not open an explorer window. He is able to use AIM, so I sent him spybot, adaware, and avg, and had him run all 3. I also sent him hijackthis, since I remebered you using that log to help me with my issues. I will include that log here, and if you can help, i'm sure he would greatly appreciate it.

I am not a reader of these logs but one should be about tomorrow.
I do notice that he is running Norton & AVG. This is not good. Assuming he bought Norton he should uninstall AVG.
Also any exact error messages would be helpful.
-
Hello,
Like Jephree said pick the one you like the best and uninstall the other one thru add/remove program.
If your subscription has or is about to run out consider AVG 7.0 as your one and only anti-virus program.
I see several items in your HJT log that needs fixing but we need to do some scans first, SO:
Lets see what some virus scans can uncover and we will go from there.
Get the stinger here:
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/
Download it to another computer if need be, and bring it to the affected computer on floppy disk.
It will kill the top 53 virus files if any are found there
then,
Internet Explorer required
Run these two online virus scanners (Panda Activescan) following these instructions below:
http://www.pandasoftware.com/product..._principal.htm
Internet Explorer required
Also this excellent(BitDefender) scanner:http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
These scans will take more than an hour to complete, so make sure you have time to let them run thru. Save the Panda scan log and the BitDefender log and post them back here please with a new Hijackthis log.
Thanks.

ok, i will definately tell him to get rid of norton or avg, and i downloaded "the stinger" for him, but those other 2 test won't be possible. He can not open an internet explorer window. every time he tries, he gets an error message. but i'll have him do those other things, and i'll post back here when i hear back from him.

Try this:
Why don't you download Firefox browser and use it thru this fix and maybe that will help.
You can also burn this to disk.
Firefox download page:---www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/
It's more secure then IE anyway, you can switch back and forth as I do.
And it is uninstallable thru add/remove programs.
It will not take very long to download at least it didn't own my machine.
Then do this Trojan scanner which can also be burned to disk.
Please download, install, update and scan your system with the free version of Ewido trojan scanner: www.ewido.net/en/download/
1. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck "Install background guard" and "Install scan via context menu".
2. When you run ewido for the first time, you will get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
3. From the main ewido screen, click on UPDATE in the left menu, then click the Start update button.
4. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display "Update successful"), click on the Scanner button in the left menu, then click on the Start button. This scan can take quite a while to run.
5. If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
6. When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file. Please then paste the contents of the text file to this thread, along with a new HijackThis log.

ok, walked dad through what I could over the phone, and i've got the ewido log, and a new hijackthis log for you. he also uninstalled norton's, but it would not uninstall normally. had to go through symantec's site and download a handfull of programs, and a long list of instructions. i told him about firefox, and that he should use it, at least for now. but he doesn't really want to mess around with it, unless he absolutely has to. his internet explorer still isn't working though. anyway, here's the logs. thank you for your continued help, and we'll be awaiting further instruction.

ok, walked him through adaware and spybot, he said they both found quite a bit. he also told me about an error message he's getting on startup. "EM_Exec.exe The application has failed to initiate properly and will now close 0xc0000005" I'm not sure what exactly that is, but I'm willing to bet you know. anyway, here's the new hjt log. thank you for your continued help.
