Re: not sure where to post this
Ok, disabled the logitech exe, easy fix. and he went through your last set of instructions, and I have a new hjt log. But, I checked out the microsoft link you posted, and although the error codes are the same, they are listed there for IEXPLORE.exe, my dad's problem is EXPLORER.exe. I searched all around microsoft support section for almost 2 hours, and I couldn't find anything that helped. as of right now, his pc is starting up and shutting down quickly again, so I believe that most of the "junk" is gone now, but I just can't figure out this explorer problem. he can't open any folders, my computer, control panel, internet explorer. everything that you've walked us through so far has either been run from the desktop, or Start---Run---browse. He's tried using the cd that came with his computer, it's some kind of gateway restore disc, and that has an option to "add, remove, or repair selected windows components", but when he ran that, it gave him an error message saying that the version on his computer was newer than the version on the disc, and would not proceed. so, i'm stumped. if you've got any idea, he's willing to try anything at this point. thanks

Do you know what these start pages are?
You have something new in your HJT log and there just isn't much info on it/possibly a Trojan but let's make sure.
I need you to submit file(s) to see if it(they) are infected or legit:--http://virusscan.jotti.org/
Files:--- C:\WINNT\system32\klm\ws32kza.exe
copy/paste the results of that single file scanner please.
Also I normally suggest getting rid of viewpoint manager and wildtangent thru add/remove program and deleteing the folders associated with them.
-
ok, www.rr.com is his isp. roadrunner. so, i don't think that would be anything to worry about. as for ws32kza.exe, it's not there. i had him go back to the startup tab on msconfig, and it was checked on the startup items, so i had him uncheck it. he got rid of viewpoint manager, but had to use ccleaner's uninstall option, since he still can't get to his control panel. as for wildtanget, could not find any traces of it. but we can't get windows to work yet either, so it's somewhat difficult to do things.
-
Can you still see hidden files/folders? If not do that please and then look for that file.
If you can get into safe mode re-run Ewido.
Here is something to think about: Repairing IE, might go to microsoft also and look around.
Now for the full IE self repair.
Go to,
start > run > copy and paste the following text into the box:
rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"
Now press enter, do the repair for IE6
Good luck.
Firefox still available.
-
Well, He tried the self repair, but ended up getting an error message. I can't remember what the error was, (i've had a lot going on the past few days), but it wasn't able to execute any program. When he clicked run, he got the error immediately. Also, in regards to the hidden files and folders, yes, they are visible. I;ve done quite a bit of searching on microsoft.com, but everything that I find is in regards to "iexplore.exe". His actual error messages are on "explorer.exe". He's got the xp home version that came loaded on his computer, and I am rapidly developing the opinion that xp home is garbage. He has a valid product key, so I told him that he might want to try calling microsoft. I know you're a fan of firefox, and although that might get him back online, he still can't open folders, or get to the control panel, or much of any windows tasks. But thank you for your help so far, and if you can happen to think of anything else, we'll gladly take your advice.
